Trade for an Airstream: 1975 BMW 2002

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We see all sorts of requests for trades when scanning classifieds listings, but most of the time, they feel like major shorts in the dark. Or, more that the seller can’t quite land on an asking price and therefore want to hedge their bets and see what comes through the transom for an offer. This survivor-grade 1975 BMW 2002 is offered by a seller who has very specific swap candidates in mind, asking owners of either an Airstream (era and model not specified) or a 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500 (you know, the one in the hip-hop videos) to send their offers for his very original 2002. If you don’t have any trade bait, the 2002 can be found here on craigslist for $30,000.

30 G’s is top-of-the-market pricing for a big bumper, non-Tii spec 2002. This one may be an incredibly nice survivor, but it’s still not the desired spec according to most enthusiasts. Now, the seller does say he is negotiable on the price, but it’s still a curious thing to ask for $30,000 or trade for a vehicle worth considerably more, in most cases. The 2002 does have more than a few things going for it, however, including its rust-free condition, including the vulnerable areas; bone-stock configuration, right down to the steel wheels; and the old-school California blue plates, which confirm long-term California residence.

However, there are still some faults to sort out. On the outside, the front bumper appears to be tweaked. The passenger-side bumper accordion has moved in a non-standard way and the bumper does look slightly misaligned. The same goes for the trim on the driver’s side, which doesn’t seem to line up between the fender, door, and rear quarter. The driver’s seat does have a rip in the cushion and will need to be patched to be perfect. But when you look at the rest of the cabin, there’s a lot of good news. The original Blaupunkt radio is still in the dash, the rest of the seats appear to be untorn, and the Coco mats are the best color for a tan interior.

What’s curious about this car is that it supposedly sold in September for $22,252 on a popular internet auction site. The seller has the car listed in Palo Alto, which is 40 minutes from Scotts Valley, where it was listed earlier this year. It’s entirely possible the current owner has realized the base-spec 2002 isn’t the most exciting car in the world – sure, it’s analog as heck and is one of the purest forms of a driver’s car you’ll ever own – but is that experience worth $30,000? That’s a matter of subjective discussion, and it does make one wonder if the original transaction did go through and the current owner is already bored with his purchase. Thanks to Barn Finds reader T.J. for the find.

Rust free, good condition, ugly bumpers, blah colors, and nothing special except the excessive price.

    Couldn’t agree more.

Having had two earlier desirable 2002’s, with sunroofs, one with dealer installed a/c I can’t imagine paying 30 large for a “Squarey” as opposed to a “Roundie”. Hell I wont even pay 30 large for a Roundie. There isnt even a sunroof. Whats the world coming to!

My guess is this is a dealer selling it. The wording of the ad is all in the third person in reference to the work done

    Same old same old.

Nice, but way overpriced for what it is. 2002s are cool and all but damn. Don’t make sense.
