Tri-Five Daily Driver: 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Not every classic car has to be a museum piece. Sometimes they can be driver-quality automobiles you can take to Cars & Coffee and strike up conversations over. That could be the case with the seller’s 1957 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe. The paint isn’t perfect, and neither is the interior, but it’s said to be a good-running vehicle looking for a new home. Located in Assonet, Massachusetts, this “Tri-Five” Chevrolet is available here on eBay where $9,900 is the magic number – thus far.

The Tri-Five Chevies of 1955-57 created quite a stir when new. They were good-looking cars with the first V8 (optional) from the company in more than 37 years. Nearly five million of them were built and the ‘57s with their tailfins seem to be sought after more than the others. Two-tone paint jobs were becoming quite popular, and Chevrolet offered plenty of them, like the (we think) India Ivory over Tropical Turquoise on the seller’s car. It’s one of 168,000 Bel Air Sport Coupes built in 1957, so the number of survivors out there is not small.

No history is provided on what this Bel Air has been up to for the past 67 years. The indicated mileage (likely a placeholder) is 100,000, so chances are it’s seen plenty of landscape. The seller does say the body and floors are sold and the vehicle has not been restored. Chances are it has been repainted at some point as there are lots of imperfections when you study the photos.

The interior isn’t completely original as the material on the front seats differs from that on the back. And is the engine an original 265 or 283 cubic inch V8 or something newer? And, while we’re at it, Is this the 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission or a later Turbo-Hydramatic? We don’t know, but the car is said to run and drive well. You could spend some of your savings and restore the car or just drive and enjoy it the way it is.

I’m slightly confused as to the aluminum “swish panels” on the side…they look like 4-door versions…

Might be a fake… selling a car, not owning it, using photos from other advertising. .as frequently happens with my car and fotos. 😡

Your correct 8b, probably a 150 or 210, back in the day four doors where basically parts cars, someone probably took the Bel-Air trim and swapped it very common years ago

I’d be asking a lot of questions before bidding on this one. The pictures show a turquois steering wheel and dash from the outside but they’re black on the interior photo.

The black steering wheel is on a red car.

That’s what it looks like to me too! Saw a U Tube video of someone doing this. Side molding gives it away. That’s one cost cutting measure that should have been avoided.

Seat material is different in pictures as well. Definitely a scam. Hopefully somebody doesn’t get duped out of their money.

That interior photo isn’t even of THIS ’57 Chevy! Look closer! The Bel Air seats are turquoise also. The photo of the interior shown in the ad is of a completely different car! If you look very closely at this photo, you can see a very small portion of the hood of the car, and the car in the photo showing the interior is red/maroon and is also showing black seats and black steering wheel. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAR!!!

I’m wondering which car is for sale or if you’re if you’re recieving both cars for your money? No mention at all of a second car , yet exterior pics are turquoise inside and out. While interior pics are of a red car with black interior.

I thought there was something off with the roof line. It shows at the door lines also. I believe you’re correct.

Definitely a fugazie, check the rear quarter trim alignment down angle and seam in the white space! It’s a shame that people like this can think we’re that stupid

Wow. There are some sharp eyed folks on BF. The discrepancies pointed out makes this reader wonder what sup. It is almost like there are two different cars. Two days left and $12,600 as I write this. Danger Will Robinson! Out of morbid curiosity I clicked the watch button.

Face it – the blue car’s a 50 footer – but if it ran and drove okay I’d give the guy $1000-1500 for it and start taking it tri-five shows and cars and coffee just for laughs

The body and floors are sold so that needs to be taken into account as well. I think I would steer clear.

Wish it was possible to put these comments onto the eBay auction itself. Buying a car can be such an emotional experience that a buyer will not see glaring deficiencies right in front of their eyes. Unfortunately, I’ve fallen for poor cars in the past.

    I messaged the eBay seller..

Your car has shown up on
Many comments that are very concerning as to what you’re selling. Confusing photos of two cars, one turquoise inside and out, one red with maroon or black interior. Roofline, and door jams on turquoise car suspicious that this car is a 4 door to 2 door conversion.
I’m not interested in the car, but I’m hoping the buyer gets what he’s expecting.

    His reply…

    Yes everything in the pictures

I had said to seller that his car has shown up on barnfinds.com.
Apparently eBay hid the website from my message.

I also was not allowed to send him a second message. This guy is definitely a scammer. Wish we could have his auction pulled from eBay before someone gets ripped off. He may just be fishing for the non refundable deposit money, then relist the car. Buyer beware!

I e mailed the seller and asked what condition the undercarriage was in and he said “lots of rot that’s why it’s so cheap” yet the listing states frame body floors in good condition whats up with that?
