Triple Black: 1973 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

When it comes to iconic rides that are appealing based on looks alone, the Cadillac Eldorado convertible is a perfect example of a car that can sell itself on presence alone. This 1973 model is being sold as part of an estate sale and the seller claims it has been sitting in this garage for the better part of 30 years. It still runs and benefits from new tires and a fresh battery. The desirable triple black droptop is listed here on eBay with bids to $9,800 and no reserve.

For a while now, some pundits have been claiming that the collectors and buyers of these classic American cars and trucks are aging out of the hobby, and that this will translate to some sort of major sell-off. I will admit to being one of the armchair quarterbacks who felt this same way, but I’m happy to admit I may have been wrong. I continue to see strong sales for classic cars like this Cadillac and other iconic models such as the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln Continental, which would suggest the love affair with American classics is far from over. Looking down the sides of this Cadillac, it appears to be a rust-free California garage find.

Now, there’s no shortage of classic Cadillacs for sale on a regular basis, so you have to look for some elusive characteristics to set it apart from the crowd. In this case, I would say the triple black color scheme is a significant differentiator, as you don’t often see Eldorados of this vintage with the matching black leather interior. This is a very sharp cabin, especially when paired with the wood trim that Cadillac splashed around the interior for this generation of its top-shelf convertible. The leather appears to be in good shape and looks like it would rebound nicely with some rejuvenator.

The back seat shows even fewer signs of use, suggesting that this droptop was used by a solitary driver and their front passenger and not for hauling the whole gang around town. The seller notes it does have a few flaws, including a top that will need replacement and a muffler that will also need repair/replacement. The parade boot is still in the trunk, which is definitely a nice-to-have feature. Overall, this Eldorado will likely present incredibly well with a detailing and new top, and with the listing offered at no reserve, it seems like a potential bargain in the making.

“FREIDA! Stop punching the gas driving out of the garage!” (Grumbling) “I’d swear she does that on purpose..”😉
Nice Eldo. Too many were cannabalized for rear drive sand rails back on the day..

It is in Norco, CA (Riverside area), per the eBay listing- click on the live link in the BF article.

P.S.- I bet this car is fun to sit down in during August while wearing shorts, if it has been parked outside with the top down…yow!

Better buy a gas station before you buy it. Clint Eastwood bought a new red 73 in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Great movie. Great car.

Sorry, George: The Eldorado that “Thunderbolt” bought was white with a red interior! Whew! Thought for a moment that I was losing it, LOL!! :-)

The Indy 500 pace car was a white/white/red 1973 Eldorado convertible; 53 replicas where made….. I owned one for a minute 30 years ago…. It was well used, and it ended up going to Germany when I sold it. Big, wide and thirsty!

Driving up to one of these car hop drive in eateries, a drive-in movie 🍿 🎥 🎦 theatre 🎭 or on a 3 day weekend summer drive. That’s the only way to Ride. Emojis, cool. And by the way, who in the classic car hobby worries about gas mileage? If you buy a 500CI V-8 from ’73, you ought to know what you’re getting yourself into.

My dad was an executive at GM Marketing Staff. He drove “company cars” as part of his job. He would bring home a special catalog, a big book with trim samples, paint chips, etc. and pick out what he wanted. The company would pick the brand rotation from Chevrolet, Olds, Pontiac, and Buick, He got to choose whatever model and body style he wanted — Wagons, convertibles, coupes…. He could also pick one Cadillac or one Corvette per year, if he wanted to buy it at the end of the rotation. He put about 3000 miles on each, and switch it to the next one. He drove 1500+ miles per month, so that meant 6 cars a year. In this era, he would pick a Cadillac convertible as the first car in the fall, and at the end, purchase it for the standard used car discount of 35% off of list, and Mom would drive that for the year, and sell when the new one was purchased. These were pretty cool cars. O-60 in about 8 1/2 seconds frm memory. Mom’s only complaint was the windows would leak, especially in the drive-thru car wash

Years ago, when I lived in the urban area, the guy across the street was a working pimp and he had a 72 black Eldorado with a white top and a white interior. Freddy, really his name, had the whole “Superfly” front end on it, gangster whitewalls, and the whole shebang.
I always admired his car, and we traded a couple times. He’d take my 68 Lincoln 4 door Continental and leave me the keys to his Eldorado.
Funny, he never wanted to borrow my 59 VW van.

These are wonderful cars, the epitome of I have arrived in their time. I had a chocolate colored one with a tan roof. Super reliable, whisper quiet, everything worked. The car was 14 years old when I bought it for a whopping 500.00, garage kept, hard boot, just one tinzey tiny issue. No matter what you did 8 miles to a gallon was it. This car ranks as the most thirsty drinker I ever owned. Good thing I ran a wrecking yard and fuel was free. I sold it and it went to Europe and I replaced it with a 76 that did 12 to 14 on a gallon. Still great cars, easy to maintain great in snow and inclement weather, wonderful on starry summer and any other warm night.I miss these cars. I kept my 76 and a 71. This one will make a great driver ( tanker sold separately).
