Weighing in at more than 4,500 pounds and measuring over eighteen and a half feet long, this 1974 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham comes from a period when size mattered and played a significant role when it came to luxury offerings. The car got a redesign for ’74 and even tipped the scales a little bit heavier to begin the new generation, coinciding with the same time the oil embargo was taking its toll on customer demand for large gas guzzlers, and I can’t help but believe this is one of the cars that contributed to Chrysler being in a financial crisis by the decade’s end. And that’s a shame, because for a mid-seventies full-size car the New Yorker really ticked a lot of the right boxes and was certainly elegant, especially the Brougham model, so if you’ve been in the market for a nice 2-door land yacht from a bygone era this one here on eBay might be worth checking out. The car is in Akron, Ohio, with a buy-it-now price tag of $8,500.
We’d like to say thanks to reader Mike U. for his excellent tip here! Green was a popular color from this period, and the seller tells us his car is an unrestored example with the paint and body still looking nice to be 49 years old, so I’m guessing he’s indicating this is still the factory finish on the outside. It really does still present well all the way around, with some scratches and small dings mentioned, but that’s to be expected with this much age and I’m not spotting anything serious enough on the exterior that would make me want to do anything immediately other than just enjoy it. I also like that the wheel well skirts are still in place.
The green continues inside, with the interior condition looking like a testament that the 68,000-mile claim is probably accurate. The back seat appears like it’s seldom been sat in, and the front material is nicely preserved as well, with the instrument panel and dash also looking good to be nearing the five-decade milestone. We get to view a few photos from underneath, and although we can’t see everything from down below the areas that are visible appear to be solid, so I’m thinking rust is likely not an issue on the bottom side.
The 440 was down to 230 horsepower by ’74, and this one’s got a fresh Edelbrock carburetor on top with the original Carter unit included in the sale. Other recent fuel system maintenance includes a gas tank flush plus a new sending unit and fuel pump, along with a fresh set of belts and hoses, but the power steering pump needs replacing as it’s leaking when the car is used regularly. The big block has also been tuned up in the not-too-distant past, with the seller saying the car drives nicely, at least for the first 35 minutes as that’s been his longest cruise to date. The price is stated as firm, but in my opinion, the number seems reasonable or at least in the ballpark for what we’re seeing here. What do you think?
Love when they say price is firm. Firm as long as someone ponies up for that amount. If not, maybe fix the leaks and try some flexibility. Nice car by the way.
Brings back memories of my grandmother’s 76 Chrysler Newport from Yanda Motors in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. 4dr, same green with green vinyl top and green paisley fabric. Driving was fun with very touchy brakes, navigated using the hood ornament and front fender repeaters.
Nice car, would be fun to cruise around in, and that 440 will move it nicely, especially if upgraded to dual exhaust. I had a 78 Cordoba in that same dark green color, but with a white leather interior. Not much of a market for these old boats, though, so he may be waiting a long time to find a buyer, even at a lower price.
I used to get a ride to work from a friend that had a brand new one of these in baby blue. I’ll never forget what a smooth floaty ride it had.

Oh and instantly I’m transported back to 1979. A high school buddy and I planned a trip down to Ocean City but we had no wheels! Thanks to his grandma and her Chrysler she didn’t drive much so we had the green light to use it for a weekend. We took our girls down also and the party was on! If old granny only knew what went on in that boat. Rayleen had her bare a*$ up in the back seat half way down the highway. She was a real tart! Wouldn’t bring her home but for 4 days on 98th street she was a warrior! Damn girl.

Yes, they are that long. My 72 Polara Custom station wagon, one of the largest production wagon models ever built, was 19′ 4″ bumper guard to bumper guard. Could not walk around it with the garage door closed in a 20′ deep garage.
Looks like a nice original car at a nice price when you realize how that 440 can be tweaked for some impressive horsepower with camshaft, heads & ignition upgrades. Would be a ultimate freeway flyer to destination like the beach!
