True Barn Find: 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan de Ville

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller of this 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan de Ville says this one is a true barn find, originally parked when the price of gasoline reached 50 cents per gallon!  If I did my homework correctly, that would have been around 1975, so it’s possible that this Caddy may have been resting for around half of a century.  It’s now been moved to a garage, with the current owner trying to find this vintage sedan a new place to call home.  This one can be found here on Craigslist in Chesterfield, Virginia, with the seller aiming for a price of $14,500.  However, he also mentions the idea of a best offer.  We’d like to thank reader T.J. for sending in the tip here!

One thing that makes this Cadillac special is the exceptionally low mileage.  Even though it operated for nearly 20 years, less than 26,000 miles were accumulated, which the owner says are original.  From the ad text, I couldn’t figure out whether or not the V8 is presently running, as there’s no mention that this one’s been driven anytime recently.  However, it is stated that a new battery has been installed, plus a brand new set of wide whitewall tires has also been added, so it’s possible that even after such a long hibernation that this one remains operational.

Outside, the paint is said to be all original, although it is showing quite a bit of wear from such a long time of living in a barn.  Hopefully, everything that can be seen on the panels doesn’t extend beyond the surface, and the buyer will discover a solid body to work with here.  The exterior also seems to be complete, including the trim, plus there aren’t any obvious dents or severe body damage.  This one may end up not requiring an extensive amount of prep before it’s ready for a respray.

The interior is described as immaculate, and it does appear to be in fine shape considering the age here.  It’s a good sign that the under-dash lamp near the radio is illuminated, plus the automatic headlight dimming sensor was a fairly high-tech gadget for the period.  If the odometer is on the second trip around, I’d think the interior would show a lot more wear, so the mileage claim here may be accurate.  Is this 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan de Ville one you’d be interested in getting back on the road?

    This four-door hardtop is amazing.

New tires and a new battery mean it’s in good working order.

I understand it’s in good condition and at a good price.

I’d love to have it for road trips.
My Dad had one and we loved it.

It has been said a million times on this site, “It woulda been nice if they coulda rolled it out into the daylight to get some better photos.” Having said that…this could be a very nice project, hope the rodents haven’t done too much damage.

My OM always wanted a Cadillac. He was a child of the depression, born in 24 and in those days they were a symbol that you had made it. They were certainly much more up market than even a Buick, not just in features, but in the quality of everything in the car. His first Caddie was a 56. He got rid of a 56 Ford (with the big engine) and his first Caddie was a low mileage nice 2 door. He had that for a few years and then picked up a nice 60 model that was only a year old. He had that for a long time but then finally was able to afford new ones. Nowadays there isn’t as much differentiation, but in those days Caddies were very different than the rest of the GM line. I remember well how much nicer they rode and how quiet they were compared to everything else. Back in the time they were the best you could get.

This reminds me of Mrs Downeys Coupe de Ville on CHiPs. Marjorie Bennett played the irrascible Grand Damme In two or three episodes. When Ponch referred to her car as a *CADDY *, she drew herself up and PROCLAIMED * it’s a CADILLAC! I wonder if anyone remembers Mrs Downy, Marjorie, or even CHiPs? Friends used to call me the *Complete Compendium of worthless Information *. Guess I’m lucky to still have mental competence, when so much has gone south. Happy Hollow Weenie to all!

      Hi Rick,
Im glad this Cadillac brought you out today. I don’t remember Mrs. Downy but I do remember CHiPs. And, yes, even I have used that line. A Chevrolet can be a Chevy but a Cadillac is ALWAYS a Cadillac.
Ive told you guys before my aunt and uncle next door had a ’56 Series 62 Coupe in this color but with a white roof.
Uncle slide on some ice, t-boned a tree and a large branch fell and crushed the roof. I was only 5, but that’s when they ordered their brand new 1959 Series 62 coupe.

Hi Rick, not many folks will recall
Mrs. Downey from CHIPs, bur Angel 😇 would do a really impersonation of her hat’s for sure! Cars like this one are what
we rode around in as Dad most always put Mom in a used Cadillac as they were the best used car you could buy back then
and really gave you your money’s worth. In all, I think we had five,
maybe six of them altogether, with the very last one being the ’66 Calais 4-door hardtop that I
bought from them to keep my drunken uncle from wrecking it.
Boy, I can just see it now. Me and
a really nice young lady tooling around in a car like this. I’m holding her hand ✋ as the radio 📻 plays some REAL music 🎶🎶
and not the crap they pass off as
music 🎵🎶 today. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll get to kiss 💋 her as we wait for the light to turn green. Such are the things that dreams 👄💕 are made of. Angel, your thoughts?

Uh oh, here I go being the bad guy. This is such a cool car, and I have to be the odd guy out.
If “IF” was a fifth, we’d all be drunk, but if I had it I’d restore it. Upgraded Cadillac drive train, Air Suspension, 17s or 18s on “normal” sized rubber and leave the patina!

Well, as long as you know you’re the bad guy. The only things I’d change would be fresh paint, front discs, and seat belts.

What you describe is not by any means a restoration.

First car I drove (in the back yard) at 12 years old was a ’56 blue with a white top. Dad got it for fixing someone’s washing machine. I still look at these on Barn Finds and put them on my wish list lol.

Sure reminds me of my grandmother’s 55 Coupe de Ville. It was stored in a barn for over 50 years before we finally let it go. Great memories.
