True Barn Finds! Pair of 1965 Ford Mustangs

Located in a barn in Tellico Plains, Tennessee is a pair of 1965 Ford Mustangs that have been hidden away for the past 20 years. They’re in the back corner of a barn and other vehicles seem to have them pinned down. Both are said to have low mileage and 289 V8s under the hoods. But the overall condition of the cars is hard to determine from the photos provided. The seller has listed them here on Facebook Marketplace but two prices are shown: $40,000 for the pair or $30,000 together with no indication whether the seller will split them up.

Anyone who knows vintage cars is aware that the Mustang was the runaway sales hit of the mid-1960s. During its first full year of production, some 559,451 of them rolled off the assembly line, meaning Ford was in high gear the whole year cranking out automobiles. 372,123 of them were the “standard” coupes, while another 65,663 were “standard” convertibles (“standard” equals not luxury). Given the large initial numbers, many early Mustangs are still around today.

The white coupe looks as though it may be more complete than the red convertible only because it at least has a full grille. There is no mention of body damage or rust on either car, but the views are limited so we don’t see much of either vehicle. The seller says they both have the small-block V8, but we don’t know if 2 or 4-barrel carburetors are involved. Nor do we know the transmission choice in each car, but the seller says both have air conditioning. Since they’ve been sitting for two decades, it’s unlikely that either will run without work. That being the case, are they worth $40,000 combined or $20,000 each? Only a road trip would shed any real light on what’s stashed away in that barn.

Nice write up Russ from what you had to work with. FBM really sucks for the most part. Been dealing with a women on FBM for an MG TD. Taking forever. Take care, Mike.

There must be thousands of first gen Mustangs in barns. Here are two. But we know almost nothing about them, except the seller has invested next to zero effort marketing them while asking for big bucks. It would be… interesting if a Mustang enthusiast visited and offered the seller some advice.

For close to that kind of money you can get a running and driving car and have money left over to buy one of these, which would be hard to recommend at this point.

Tough call on these without a personal inspection…AFTER they are pulled out of the barn.

These used to be 100 dollar cars, or sometimes give aways if you hauled them far away. I understand this is not 1975 anymore, but I don’t think the ask is anywhere near realistic. I wish i had hid away more junk back in the day, but my wife would have killed me. So what is the story here? Understanding wife? No wife? A dude that didn’t care what the wife thought? You know, you can’t snuggle on a cold night with rotten old machinery out in the shed.

I just have to laugh, like everything in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, OVERPRICED. I cannot figure out what people in that area of Knoxville think? Everything they have is SUPER GOLD, and what is outside that bubble is JUNK. Strangest place, everytime I have been there, you get a creepy feeling that there is a camera on you. LOL FB marketplace, is the first hint of something not good, and the “professional” pictures is another hint.

Yea to all the above and it looks like a dirt floor garage. Wants maximum scratch for minimum effort. Anyone notice that no matter what is for sale the seller thinks he has gold? The BJ or Me-cum syndrome. Unless they are really super rust free, these aint exactly rare. Anyhoo, good luck and happy motoring.

Why would anyone spend $20K for a Mustang that has spent 20 years sitting on a dirt floor? The bottom will be a mess. Any decent auction has running cars in better condition for under $30k. Pass.
