Tuk Tuk Tuk You Say?

'90 Tuk Tuk

Listed here on craigslist is this 1990 Tuk Tuk parked in Lolita, Texas and priced at $3,000. The owner says this was a barn find and the photos seem to prove it. We don’t know what continent the barn is located in though, so that could make for an interesting story to track down. Tuk Tuks have been produced for over 50 years and hauled countless people. The name, it is said, comes from the sound of the running engine.

Tuk Tuk Barn Find

We don’t know if this unit will give you that “Tuk Tuk” sound you long for.  You will have to contact the owner to get more information about the condition of the engine.

Tuk Tuk

This Tuk Tuk is listed here on craigslist in Missoula, Montana with an asking price is $10,000, but the owner is willing to take an offer.

Tuk Tuk Engine

The engine, turn signals and the horn are in working order. It also has a tow ball, seat belts with a 4 speed manual gearbox.

Storage Unit Tuk Tuk

This Tuk Tuk was used to drive around a storage facility and is no longer needed. If you are in the area you can stop by and take a look.  The owner will, if you ask, send you some more images. So will you be putting around in a Tuk Tuk anytime soon?

Kind of like “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. I like it, it would not work out here in the woods though.

Have fond memories playing chicken with oncoming traffic while blazing the streets of Bankok in a tuk-tuk. A bit of advise, don’t egg-on those tuk-tuk drivers to go faster, you’ll be asking for it!

The name on the back of the Tuk-Tuk says it all.
We make them here in Thailand.
We call them Saam Lor (3 wheels), but you will find them all over Asia !
Since they are a tourist attraction, it usually costs more to ride in one than a fully enclosed air conditioned taxi.
The original ones were imported from Japan to Thailand around 45 years ago.
Parts are easy to find from the manufacturers here.
“Tuk Tuk Forwarder Co.,Ltd” , started in 1993 with its latest plant established in 2000. The total production capacity of 2 manufacturing plants is 16,000 units a year, and export to more than 30 countries worldwide.
Currently (no pun intended)Thailand is trying to produce the first Electric Saam Lor, which would be NO bad thing here in Bangkok.

Original Tuk Tuks were designed formt he Vespa Ape model, but were made in many countries, mostly in India by a company called Bajaj. However, later they were made in Japan, China and Thailand.
They are very cool and fun to drive.
In many countries like Thailand they were preceded by the Daihatsu Trimobiles,
which were a tiny pick up truck with a passenger compartment in the bed.
Daihatsu Trimobiles are still in use in Jakarta Indonesia, and can be very fast and qute dangerous, but therefore extremely exciting and adventurous.
    Daihatsu also made Tuk Tuks.
We have a trimobile and an Ape in the collection, but alas, no real Tuk Tuks!
