You only had to check out the Pontiac GTO’s production numbers to see that the muscle car market was shrinking by 1970. Sales were down by roughly half from 1969, and they were nothing like the heyday in 1966 when 97,000 GTOs left the assembly line. The seller’s car is a 1970 GOAT convertible, one of 2,173 produced with a 400 cubic inch V8 (no Ram Air) and an automatic transmission. Lots of new parts adorn this drop-top, and it’s available in San Rafael, California, and here on eBay for $36,000 OBO.
New for 1970 was that the GTO was no longer limited to 400 cubic inches under the hood. The 455 V8 debuted and was generally good for 360 horsepower. But the 400 remained the bigger seller, and that’s what’s under the bonnet of this GTO, though the seller doesn’t use the terms “numbers-matching” or “period-correct” in describing this Pontiac. In fact, no photo of the engine compartment is included. But the VIN provides validation that this car is a real GTO, not a LeMans made up to resemble one.
The seller has forked over some cash to get the car in excellent running order. The parts list includes new brakes, a gas tank, and other fuel-related items. The carburetor has been rebuilt, and the engine has been tuned up. The car sports Rally II wheels, which are said to have been refinished. The black bucket seat interior looks really good, and the ragtop is power-operated.
Very little body filler was found on the car by the seller when he/she acquired it, and admits the red paint isn’t perfect. And we’re unsure if red is the original color, as one photo of the car on a lift seems to show the trunk lid ope,n and it has tan paint that someone overlooked. If this is true, that is something you would think the seller would advise about. And full-length pics of the vehicle were little used, the seller opting for area-specific photos.

Looks like this one was originally Baja Gold. Same as my first car. I think it really does need a repaint in the original color to be correct. That red doesn’t seem true to the Pontiac Cardinal Red IMO.

That endura bumper was just killer on these and the Firebird. Looks like it wants to kick tail just for looking its way. Seeing the missing window crank reminds me of a stove I once had with only one knob for the burners. You needed to be sharp to cook on that one.

Lots of little nitpicks with this one… not a single photo of the engine compartment, trunk, dash closeup, no photo’s of the top up which could be a concern considering the fading of the underside of the top. Chrome trim at the back edge of the hood missing. Rear valance missing. The Pontiac-specific lug nuts (on some of the wheels) should have black, not red centers, the GTO decal kerning/spacing is off on the trunk lid, the dash pad appears to have a pretty good crack in it, and a tacky resale red paint job to top it off, not to mention all the other already pointed out things like the spoiler. $36k is a lot of $$$ for this car.
