Turnkey Classic: 1940 Buick Super Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Recently, we’ve seen a few examples at Barn Finds of situations where genuinely passionate owners have elected to downsize their collection. That is the case with this 1940 Buick Super Coupe, and its next owner will be slipping behind the wheel of a vehicle that presents superbly. It is a turnkey proposition that will allow the buyer to make the most of the summer sun in a car guaranteed to turn heads. Located in Orange Park, Florida, you will find the Buick listed for sale here on eBay. The seller has set a BIN of $32,450, although they leave the way clear for interested parties to make an offer. I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder Larry D, who continues to spot some wonderful classics for us.

The owner is a passionate enthusiast, and the seller is listing the Buick on their behalf as the first of many cars that will emerge from their collection seeking a new home. The seller is candid about this Buick’s condition, describing the paint as very old. That may indicate that the combination of Nottingham Gray and Casino Beige gracing its panels is original, although they don’t specifically state that. It shines warmly, with only the occasional chip or mark. The panels are equally impressive, and, thanks to its long-term location and garage-kept history, this Coupe remains rust-free. I can’t spot any issues with the glass. It is crack-free and has no evidence of clouding. Most of the chrome and stainless trim is original, and its sparkling appearance offers a stunning contrast to the dark paint. The wheels wear contrasting red, and when combined with full wheel covers and wide whitewall tires, they add a classy finishing touch to the exterior.

When we open this Buick’s doors, we are greeted by an interior whose presentation matches the exterior. The seats wear gray cloth upholstery, and this is free from wear or significant marks. Buick carried this material onto the door trims, and these look as impressive as the seats. A rubber mat covers the floors, showing no evidence of damage or obvious wear. The wheel rim has some light cracks, but since these haven’t opened, they could be considered acceptable for a survivor-grade car. The dash looks good, and the Coupe features its original factory AM radio.

There are times when I look at cars like this Buick and feel that manufacturers have lost their sense of imagination. Many models now carry number designations rather than snappy names, and I can’t remember the last time one gave their engine a name. The days of such handles as Thriftmaster, Super Commando, Cobra Jet, and Turbo Jet have been consigned to the pages of history. The same is true of the “Fireball” straight-eight residing under the hood of this Coupe. With a capacity of 248ci and a power output of a respectable 115hp, it could send this classic galloping through the ¼ mile in 21 seconds. The seller indicates that this Buick is in excellent mechanical health. It runs and drives well, the transmission and clutch are smooth, and it has no apparent needs. It is a turnkey classic ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.

This 1940 Buick Super is a stunning car, and while it isn’t perfect, it is a classic that will attract its share of attention wherever it goes. Its overall condition is consistent with a car that has been treated with respect and that should still be plying our roads in another eighty-two years. If you would love to own a vehicle that harks back to a simpler time, maybe you should consider accepting the seller’s invitation to organize an inspection. That will confirm the car’s condition and could see you driving away in your own slice of automotive glamor.

What a sweetheart Buick. It still amazes me that Buick offered OHV 8 cylinders in the late 30s and onward while Ford and other companies continued the flat heads well into the late 40s and early 50s. Great lines on this coupe. Great find

Looks like an automobile that would be perfect for The Nicola Bulgari Collection. Right up his alley (double pun intended). On my bucket list.

I owned one which I passed along to my son in law. They are relatively smaller than the other models and drive very will though windshield wipers and the # of turns lock-to-lock leaves no doubt of what vintage car you are driving. The Straight Eight is wonderful, brakes are period’capable so all-in temper your expectations, and enjoy a ride in the country

Wow. I could go for this one. It is a unique driver and a decent offer might take it. It proves that they are still out there at a reasonable price?

What a difference this 1940 Buick is from the BARN FINDS funky 1940 Buick Coupe presented at this site last week. (Or it could have been a ’41. Memory sometimes fails me.) This is an unbelievably beautiful car.

HC, my ’32 Chev deluxe coupe (roll-down rear window with roll-up window shade, luggage carrier, rumble seat, wind deflectors that clamp between the upper & lower window frames, twin spare wire wheels, purchased from original owner) had the stove-bolt OHV 6. The present owner refuses to sell it back to me, because he has managed to keep a firm grip on it through 2 divorces! He bought it from a drug dealer seizure, frame bent like a pretzel after all the police chases, body on the garage floor, wonderful radiator surround with original wire screen hanging on the wall. I chastise myself for selling it for $110, but young/broke/stupid, and 62 years ago. :>))
