TV Star? 1973 Ford Maverick 302 V8

Back when I had my long-running tv reality car show, Scotty G’s Oddball Garage… Just kidding, there was no such thing. This 1973 Ford Maverick was actually on a TV reality car show and it can now be found here on craigslist for $8,000 or here on Clasiq auctions in St. Petersburg, Florida where the current bid price is $4,400. Here is the original listing. Thanks to Gunter K. for sending in this tip!

If I would have had a reality tv show, I would have liked to have had a Ford Maverick to tinker with on camera. They’re very unusual to see today but we roll through Pintos and Pacers here at Barn Finds like Todd goes through bottle openers. (kidding) (sort of) A four-door Maverick, though, they rarely get any love as they have two too many doors for most people.

This car has an interesting story, as told by the seller, or by the owner. The person who owned this car had fond memories of owning a Maverick years ago so she looked for another one, hoping to relive some great memories and try to instill some old-car-goodness in her grandsons. Well as the story usually goes these days, the grandsons have basically zero interest so instead, she somehow campaigned to get it on All Girls Garage and it made it! The show spent the whole half-hour on this car going through it, but alas, it’s now for sale.

Ford made the Maverick originally as an import-fighter from 1969 for the 1970 model year up until 1977, at least for North America. They only made a two-door and four-door version but a convertible would have been fun. The interior in this car looks outstanding, the seats are beautiful both front and back. You can look up the All Girls Garage episode but I refuse to pay for any more TV channels and the only one that I saw online is a subscription version.

The cool part of this car, other than having been tweaked a bit on TV, is that it has Ford’s 302 cubic-inch V8 which would have had 140 horsepower. The owner had a power brake system installed apart from the work that was done on the TV show so this one sounds like it’s ready to go. Any thoughts on this Maverick?

This car has an unusual level of trim on it, and a luxurious interior as well. Nice find.

My dad had 2 71 Mavericks for his business. Most dependable cars made at the time. One 2 door one 4 door. Both had 200 ci 6 cups. Only options were heaters and am radios. Both went over 100000 miles with many different drivers. Driven very hard.

The All Girls Garage had a female pinstriper come on the show and do all the fancy striping on the car. They also converted the turn signals to LEDs IIRC. I forget what else they did that episode,
Shocks and brakes maybe? Kinda a shame the owner has chosen to sell it.

I’m with you on the wheels, 370zpp; those Cragers really don’t suit the car at all. Steelies with the correct full wheel covers would look a lot better on a 4-door. I like the car as it has a lot going for it, especially its outstanding condition. The 302 V8 is a plus and it’s an A/C car as well. I’d want to repair the body and trim damage and maybe add a few speed parts for a little more get-up-and-go but otherwise it doesn’t seem to have any other needs. This would make for a very nice, comfortable daily driver but maybe for a little less than the ask.

My first impression was that that car looks ridiculous with those wheels. After taking a closer look, I’d have to say the same about the pinstriping.
Otherwise pretty cool, even with 4 doors; but I agree that a convertible would have been fun.

I was just looking at a You Tube video of the old Gapp and Roush 4 Door Maverick Pro Stock car! The Tijuana Taxi. Here’s the starting point

I’d ditch the slug under the hood and make a 427 coyote sleeper, those cragars I’d replace with the steelies I had on our mustang

It kills me how there’s always someone who wants to take an original rare collectible and stick a huge V8 in it.

I’m not a huge fan of 4dr maverick I like the 2dr for sure. I agree the cragars got to go… put steelies with trim rings and the original flat center caps they used on maverick mustang torino, heck even the painted magnum 500 with trim rings wouldn’t be bad.

When I arrive in my time machine back in 1973, I would be looking for a Grand Prix or Cutlass with bigger V8 and bucket seats. Then I would test drive a Nova and Maverick and find the compact cars easier to drive and park and the 5 liter V8s more fuel efficient and plenty adequate in a 55mph world. The 4 door Maverick would be easier to get in and out of than the 2 door. My practical side would say that Maverick simple machine is also reported to be very reliable. Comparing prices, I would discover than a loaded compact still costs a little less than the midsized cars I lusted for. So whether it be 1973 or 2022 that Maverick is looking like a good deal. Color isn’t my favorite. Would make sure the A/C has been modernized the power brakes are discs and the tires are new all weather radials. Would not be as many Mavericks at a car show or cruise so would be a novelty.

If Merc and BMW can call their 4 door cars coupes then we can christen this beauty what it deserves to be called in today’s parlance to make it cooler. This Maverick is hereby dubbed a “ Quad-Cab”. 🕺🏻🕺🏻👍🏻

I don’t think the Crager wheels add much to this car but I don’t think they look terrible either. Those wheels have been around since the 60’s so no biggie on a car this old. It looks like something a high school kid would have bought in ’81 and put these wheels on and nobody bothered to take them off since.
    Reversible change.

It’s a nice car especially w/ the original V8 and A/C to boost.

Homeboy called this an “original rare collectible”… what a sweet guy…keep the cragars up front… fit some fat rubber in the back with appropriate suspension all around… spend stupid money on the everything-fast and get some tickets… duh
