Two-Owner 1972 Plymouth Road Runner 512

After a complete redesign the previous year, the ’72 Plymouth Road Runner saw few changes on the outside, but under the hood was a different story.  Although the 383 engine grew a few cubic inches to 400, horsepower was down, and while a 440 was also still available, those die-hards wanting a Hemi were out of luck.  But in the midst of muscle cars being phased out as we knew them in the early seventies, the Road Runner did the best it could with the increasing government regulations and skyrocketing insurance premiums for performance vehicles.  This 1972 Plymouth Road Runner here on eBay still has the numbers-matching drivetrain, and if you like the fuselage-style B-Bodies it’s probably worth checking out.  The car is in Allen, Texas, with bidding up to $26,300, but still short of reserve.

The Mopar has only been in the hands of two different individuals, as the seller purchased it from the original owner back in 2019, and shortly thereafter the resurrection began.  The car is described as an amazing time capsule, with the paint from the doors back said to be original.  No details are given about the fenders forward, such as if they were worked on or why they needed a respray and the rest of the car didn’t.  But the good news is the body appears to be mostly straight and overall free of any major rust issues.

This one came from the factory with a 400, and while this is the original block it’s been stroked out to 512 inside.  The engine build includes a Crower cam and 440-source aluminum heads, with the seller claiming it is running awesomely.  The 727 is also a factory component, and it too was overhauled and upgraded, although no details are given as to what exact treatment the automatic received.  The good news continues out back, with the 8 3/4 rear-end also original and rebuilt, and the car has been driven less than 2.000 miles since the mechanical work was completed.

Not many specifics are mentioned regarding the interior, but it looks pretty good in there for the most part, although there is one not-too-serious tear in the driver’s seat.  But down below where it counts seems to be really solid, with several photos provided of the floor and underside, none of which reveal any causes of concern that I could spot.  The fender tag is also intact plus there’s a build sheet, and for a ’72 model, I’m liking this one pretty well.  How about you?

Nothing like a good stroking to gain the edge on the competition!

I used to think these things were so ugly and remember die hard Mopar guys were upset when the body came out. But many years and Richard Petty made us all appreciate it more than when it was released in 71. This is a nice one!

I used to think they were ugly too. Then one day I just kind of fell in love with them. Either way, they sure don’t make good looking cars anymore!

Carry a ballast resistor in the glove box, and remember, left handed thread lugs on the drivers side!

Or, use a Gm ignition module and no resistor needed at all.

Hey! Another beautiful Mopar😄!! I think the reserve is $30,000 since it this body style. I happen to like it. I remember driving a all black Runner. Manual steering and brakes. Pistol grip 4 speed and 400-4 under the hood. It was a lot of fun. I tried buying from the owner but would not give it up. I am guessing the horsepower with the 512 around 450. Also remember breaking the T-handle on the auto. I like the 70 setup with the black push button. Another Mopar would love to own. 🐻🇺🇸

Really like this car. Body colored wheels and dog dish makes it for me.

Has its nose in the air as if sniffing for prey to take down.

Really like this car but why go through stroking it and choke it with that exhaust.! Good set of headers and 3″ pipes would give it at least another 40HP. It’s not a motor home! Would love to have this car but not the right time for me. Fix the tear in the driver’s seat, change exhaust and my tag on it would be all I’d do to this to drive!

…overpriced? No, just priced at what people are willing to pay for a cool car. Way cooler than anything else out there and, don’t believe me? I own a Beautiful GM musclecar and a gorgeous Mopar. Both are 4-speeds, both are awesome but, hands-down, the Mopar makes people go crazy. Every stoplight, every parking lot, every trip down the highway.

      If you know, you know.

It’s equal to the difference between driving a Lamborghini and a Corvette.

Absolutely overpriced! Many thousands more dollars will need to be put into that car, no doubt in my mind….

We owned a basin street blue 72 RR, 400 Air Grabber Auto with full black vinyl top. Rally Wheels. Loved that car. Lol it was my dad’s business car and we ran it out one day in Eastern Oregon that car went 138 mph before we shut it down. I wish I could find it today.

I disagree, park a 63 split window beside a 63 Lambo. You may also want to check out the new Z06 performance against the current Lambos ……Enzo who???

I have a T6 metallic tan w/ tan bench seat, column auto, white roof stripe,3.23geared 83/4 axle,400,ps,pb,a/c. However, before I purchased the car, someone swiped the horn and the one off grille! I had a 71 Y9 GTX in my younger days and she was the fastest mopar I ve owned and a blast to drive. I’ve grown to really like the 71& 72 B body mopars. Some of those early 400 blocks were the stoutest of all production big blocks with exception of the elephant! Main saddles were solid cast iron unlike the “,muscle car Era 440s and 383s. Nice blue bird!

Why was the whole interior removed and put back in but the drivers seat was left looking FUBAR, Looking At the pictures of the floor pan inside it looks like part of it is painted and part is NEW METAL BLACK. If you look on the E-BAY the seller had a LOT of other cars for sale. I’d look LONG AND HARD before bidding

Not true that horsepower was down with the 400. Horsepower was actually up.
