There can sometimes be a temptation with a certain model you’ve seen a dozen times – maybe 100 times – in the past. It never appealed to you before but all of the sudden, it scratches an itch. Perhaps in the case of a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, you decide to impersonate Sheik Abdul ben Falafel from the original Cannonball Run movie just for the hell of it. This could be your ticket, if this 1978 Silver Shadow II listed here on eBay tempts you into making a potentially risky decision. Bidding starts at $6,375 with no takers yet.

The Silver Shadow is perhaps one of the most iconic Rolls-Royce models ever made. It instantly became associated with fame and fortune, and not long after, it became the car of choice for anyone merely able to look like they had the means for such a car. The appearance left little doubt in even the most uninformed observer’s mind as to what manufacturer it belonged to, which has always been a strong suit of the Rolls-Royce brand. This particular Silver Shadow is all the more recognizable thanks to a two-tone paint job.

One of the more romantic ownership experiences involving a Silver Shadow is with Harry Metcalfe of the wonderful YouTube channel, “Harry’s Garage.” He documents a long-distance road trip following an extensive mechanical reconditioning, which almost makes it tempting to dive head-long into a restoration project like this one. The interior is in fairly rough shape and while the seller confirms it starts and runs, the listing acknowledges more work is required to make it road-worthy. The Silver Shadow II is powered by a 6.75L V8 making 200 b.h.p. and almost 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

Shifting is handled by a reliable is not sluggish 3-speed GM automatic. The Silver Shadow will always be a slow and steady cruiser, no matter what the torque rating says. In addition to the cost associated with restoring this interior, the suspension and brake systems will also need significant attention. The hydraulic systems power the brakes and self-leveling suspension, both of which require hours of your own time or specialist service to update. This Rolls is listed with a Buy-It-Now of $8,500, which still seems like a lot of scratch for a car with so many unknowns. Do you think these classy sedans are worth the price of admission?

Hmmm… different size and make of tires port/starboard?? Just scratching the surface of the once fine lady will produce a huge amount of work needed. Ever peel an onion to find it is rotten?? This may be the automotive equivalent.
