Unbelievably Inexpensive! 1966 Oldsmobile Delta 88

I’ve got the feeling this 1966 Oldsmobile Delta 88 was a “throw-in” vehicle. Perhaps the buyer was told “the deal is for all of the vehicles” and they really wanted the old pickup you can see in this picture? Regardless, the end result is an extremely affordable classic that is currently bid all the way to $338 here on eBay (and there’s not much time left!). This might be a case where the gas to get the car from its storage location in Paola, Kansas to your garage may be more than the sale price of the car!

As well as being a basis for some special models, the “88” platform came in three trim levels in 1966; the Delta 88, Dynamic 88, and Jetstar 88. This car is the highest of those as a Delta 88 Celebrity Sedan and the wide trim down the lower panels of the car identifies it as such. As you might expect, there’s some bodywork needed down there, but not as much as you might expect.

We have no idea if the indicated 81,443 miles is on the first or second time around, but honestly, it probably doesn’t matter as the car will require a thorough going-through no matter what. If what you are looking for is an inexpensive classic that you can fix to drive around, you could do a lot worse; even the lowest-spec 425 cubic-inch V-8 available in the Delta 88 sported 300 horsepower and 430 ft-lbs of torque! Sounds like some tire-spinning fun to me!

I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the interior for a sub-$1k car. Some cleaning and perhaps an inexpensive seat cover and I could live with this for a good long time. Of course, a car like this would not be economical to restore, but to refurbish for a fun driver — now we’re talking. It’s already painted white, the blessing to amateur bodyworkers everywhere because minor flaws are frequently lost in white.  And yes, those vents are for an air conditioning system, a requirement for cruising in most of the US!

I suspect an R134 conversion and new compressor are in order, but at least the air conditioning system appears complete. Who knows if the engine is free, but at this price, who cares? Let us know what you’d do with this bargain Delta Olds 88 in the comments below!

How are we supposed to know the true value without being provided the quarter mile performance info?

It’s weird auctions like this that have me chomping at the bit for travel restrictions to lift between USA and Canada. it’d be worth it to make a road trip in my buddy’s flatbed and come back with a treasure like this again.

Dash and door panels are nice, and I love the Penneys A/C system!

Is that a Ted Kennedy edition?
If so, check for water damage.

On second thought. I actually agree with you 100% PaulG.

Especially if it is within driving range with a flatbed. The 425 Olds is one of the best V8s ever manufactured.

Agree 100%. The 425 is very underrated and if this was closer I’d be awfully tempted…

Plus it is quite possible that all of the original desirable, and very hard to find parts for the Switch-Pitch variable stall speed Turbo 400 are still intact. Also one of the best transmissions ever manufactured.

Aaah not so fast “king O Savvy”… Somewhere someone is needing those clean bumpers and other valued trinkets on this 60’s ole gal. Bidding is just over 500. now, as the price inches up likely it will end below 1k, if not put back on the road the buyer would be wise to part out. Easily make back his dead prez’s.

Teddy Kennedy had a 67, failed the submarine test miserably, poor girl died in the Oldsmobile, I’d probably push this one in the water too, without occupants

Neat interior. Not my cup of tea, but as someone said, it would make a good first cruiser for a kid…And I’d get the AC working…

If it was closer I paid the tow bill to bring it to Maryland I had a two-door Dynamic 88 it’s in pretty good shape old Resto in the 80s I really could use those bumpers some other trim Maybe that’s not very fancy of a Delta a lot of options are not there I stripped a Delta many years ago and got the tilt telescoping steering column and the high compression two-barrel engine I use it as my daily driver nowadays beautiful car runs like a bat out of hell if somebody buys it for parts I’d like to negotiate the bumpers if they’re in good shape I give you five hundred bucks for Just the bumpers

Get out of the way you wankers! This is a deal. A big Olds with a 425? I would love to have it to put back on the road. Unfortunately the auction if is over, sold for $750. I hope it will live to see the road again but it was probably bought for the engine and drivetrain only. Well good luck to them, I’d like to know what the future holds for this one.
