Finding a first generation E12 5 Series that has not been completely worn down or modified is getting tougher these days, making this low mileage survivor a real treat for vintage European car fans. The seller indicates this is a second owner car with just 47,000 miles on the odometer. Finished in crisp white over a striking red leather interior, this 530i is said to run and drive with no known issues and, more importantly, no rust. It also retains original steel wheels and hubcaps. That’s a pretty short list of caveats for a 50-year-old German sedan. You can find the listing here on craigslist, out of Seattle, Washington. Thanks go to Curvette for the tip.

Launched in 1973, the E12 was BMW’s first-generation 5 Series and arguably the car that laid the template for every iteration that followed. By 1976, BMW had introduced the 530i variant powered by the 3.0-liter inline six M30B30. Rated at 176 horsepower, this engine has one of the best reputations in vintage BMW circles, known to be strong and durable when well maintained. Its Getrag four-speed manual gearbox also promised a genuinely engaging driving experience. With only 47,000 miles on the odometer, the mechanical components should feel tight, responsive, and ready to deliver that classic, analog driving experience.

The striking color combination is also a standout feature for this E12. A crisp white exterior paired with a vibrant red leather interior is a classic look. Early models like this 1976 iteration are highly coveted because of the smaller, delicate taillights before BMW shifted to the larger rear clusters later in the production run. These early rear lenses generally complement the uncluttered proportions that famed designer Paul Bracq originally envisioned for the car’s tail panel. Inside, the cabin also avoids the common modifications like cracked dash covers or aftermarket stereo cutouts which frequently ruin these vintage cockpits. The fact that this 530i E12 also wears its original wheels and hubcaps suggests a history free of typical shortcuts and patch jobs.

For an enthusiast looking to stand out from the usual E30 or E24 crowd, this early 5 Series provides a great sweet spot. It presents a time capsule example of BMW’s original sports sedan formula. The white-over-red color combination, original powertrain, and claimed low mileage suggest a car that has been cherished. If the condition checks out in person, this classic could be a beautiful entry into vintage BMW ownership for a buyer who values pure mechanical driving feedback over modern digital convenience.

I think I’m in love. I had two of these when I was young, the first was like this, but ratty and with an autobox. It had a thermoreactor for smog, if I recall. I also had a gray market 525; same body but with dual carbs and cloth seats. The steelies with BMW dog dish hub caps make the car. My father bought a 1976 Audi 100 new, same Snow White exterior with lipstick red interior. It was a beautiful piece of crap. He should have bought a BMW…

It’s either a flipper or a scam. This car sold for $10,100 on BaT in September.
