Vintage Pop-Top: 1971 Ford Bronco

When real estate agents want to make their property stand out from other listings, they can use a popular tactic called “staging” to help potential buyers feel more at home. The same approach can work for vintage vehicles, as this awesome period-correct 1971 Ford Bronco goes to show. The pop-top camper looks absolutely perfect on this vintage off-roader, and the mustard yellow paint job, along with the nicely sized wheels and tires, help this Bronco present quite well. Check it out here on eBay with bids to just under $12,000 and shockingly, no reserve.

The seller doesn’t tell us whether this Bronco has been equipped this way for years or if it’s been set up recently with the camper attachment. Either way, the pop-up camper shell is just about perfect for this truck, from its proportions to the upholstery color and patterns. The shell definitely looks like it’s a genuine vintage item as opposed to being a newer unit made to look old, which makes the condition of the interior even more impressive. That being said, I suspect details like the curtains, dining table, and couch upholstery are all recently updated. The passenger compartment up front is in very nice shape as well, with what appears to be fresh seat covers on the buckets.

This Bronco is equipped with a 3-speed manual gearbox and a 302ci V8, along with a dual-range transfer case. The seller reports that the odometer shows 66,000 miles, which may be original given the clean condition, but you never know with old-school odometers. The good news is the engine bay confirms that this exterior paint scheme, or some variation of it, is the correct one for the Bronco, but it seems likely the outside has been refreshed at least once. The seller doesn’t disclose any recent maintenance, and the details look fairly original under-hood.

Can’t you just picture yourself here? I’m a bit surprised to not see higher bids at this point, and to see a truck like this offered with no reserve. Other attractive features include manually-locking hubs and rear wheel arch extensions; no word if the fenders under the add-on flares remain uncut. The pop-top appears to have good canvas on the sides, and if you do take this Bronco to an idyllic camp site, you’ll be treated to a bed over the passenger compartment, a full kitchenette with a cooler, sink, and stove. Hopefully, those features all still work, because this truck makes me want to take off for the wild blue yonder tomorrow.

I looked at ebay and it showed a sink and stove. Where were these positioned? I cant see where they might be.
    Current bid is $15,200.

Na, once the roof is stowed it’s only a few inches above the stock roof height. It probably leans hard on the turns though!

My thoughts exactly. Forget white knuckle formula one or 185 on a crotch rocket. A nice Ides of March is all the thrill needed here.

It’s been set up this way for years. A good friend of mine owned it for awhile in CA years ago and another couple owned it for many years prior to that. It’s been passed around and bought/sold quite a few times in recent years.

My dad had one of these and we always wondered if it was a factory option. It was a wonderful camper for us. As kids we vividly remember dad popping in a beach boys tape as we headed out to the lakes here in Wisconsin. We were always the only one like it around. I never thought I would see another until now. Thank you barn finds for the blast from the past.

One of the nicer ones out there, and the way the bids are going ($20k+ w/ 2 days left) it’ll be another crazy money buy.

At $20+k current bid its not bad for the money considering what regular Broncos sell for. Personally I would get rid of the pop up camper thing and return this to a regular Bronco and enjoy it that way

For a vehicle in MA it looks remarkably well preserved and hardly used, even though the odometer looks to be at 66171; both the front seats and the camper look almost spotless. With the holes in the front fenders this one is not restored and is the definition of turnkey, so it can be enjoyed; just limit the driving to backroads because it looks tippy. Surprised this has no reserve and I can see the bidding exceeding $60K.

It looks good because it spent most of its life in CA and was well-loved by an older couple there.

I saw this same Bronco/Bronco camper combo for sale in Daytona Florida 3 years ago. It looked mostly original and it’s possible the camper was a day one addition. Probably something I would have loved to own 40 years ago!

They are buying it for the Bronco alone, looks very unsafe short wheelbase, tall camper, would not want to drive on highway, sell the camper buy Bronco top, you will make money and have a California body Bronco.
