Work-In-Process: 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T

The Coronet nameplate returned after six years in 1965 as a mid-size, B-bodied Dodge product. The R/T was included for model years 1967 through 1970 and was the high-performance variant of the car. This ’68 has been owned by the seller for nearly 20 years and is a restoration that we’re told is 90% complete. Located in Lakeville, Massachusetts, the Dodge is available here on eBay and – without a reserve – might be thought of as a bargain considering the asking price of muscle machines these days. The current bid is $14,255 but how far might it go?

Chrysler had a lot of intermediates in the muscle car field during the B-body heyday of 1968 to 1970. That includes the Road Runner and GTX from Plymouth and the Charger and Super Bee from Dodge. And the Dodge Coronet, which is the only one of those automobiles mainly targeted as family cars. For 1968, the 440 cubic inch V8 was standard in the R/T and Dodge built 10,280 2-door hardtops, with 75% produced with an automatic transmission, which includes the seller’s car and its numbers matching powertrain (according to the seller). A small quantity was assembled with Chrysler’s 426 Hemi.

As the story goes, the seller has owned this R/T for nearly two decades and a restoration was started, though we don’t know when work got underway. It’s at the project stage with a lot of the heavy lifting already done, except for at least the exterior paint. The trunk is finished in the car’s original Medium Gold Metallic color. A few patches were required, but the body was mostly solid, to begin with. The Coronet has a new rear bumper, but the front one needs to be re-chromed. We’re told the seats have been recovered with new materials.

The engine is finished and runs well, but no mention is made regarding the transmission. The seller and the car had to move at least once thus the build sheet and fender tag are missing although the seller is still searching for them. They would go a long way in validating the car as the real deal. The VIN indicates that everything should jive and the Dodge was built at the Lynch Road plant in Detroit, Michigan. Given what these hot rods can go for, is the seller being conservative by not setting a reserve?

    Seller says 90% done and yet it still needs a paint job that could easily be $20,000. and if it’s almost finished why wouldn’t the seller just finish it and sell it for the full value, with no reserve to me the seller wants to just dump this project quickly for some reason, and to say that he might have the build sheet and fender tag gives false hope, I’d be very leary on this car, but that’s just me!!
