Work-In-Progress: 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback

The popular Ford Mustang received a styling refresh in 1967, yet sales declined by 22% because of a flood of new competition. Yet, demand for the Mustang fastback doubled compared to 1966, which was a record that’s never been beaten. The seller has a 1967 fastback project that has some new bits and pieces, though its running status is in question. Located in Fraser Valley, British Columbia, this pony is available here on craigslist for an impressive $37,500 (CDN or USD?).

Mustangs in 1967 gained a bit of bulk but still look like the phenoms that set the market on fire in 1965. The engine compartment was restructured to accommodate big-block V8s as the muscle car market was heating up fast. Instead of a 289 cubic inch V8 (like the one in the seller’s car), you could easily get a 390 or 428 fire breather to do battle at the next stoplight. The drop in Mustang sales from 607,000 units in ’66 to 472,000 in ’67 is explainable. But why did 71,000 buyers line up for a fastback in ’67 vs. 36,000 the year before?

Details regarding this Ford are limited. What’s the status of the 289 V8? And is the manual transmission a 3-speed or a 4-speed? It appears to have been in the seller’s garage for a long time, kept covered when work isn’t being done. New floors have been welded in, but is there rust elsewhere to be concerned about? The gas tank and fuel pump are new, and the carpeting is fresh, but the seats appear to have a couple of split seams.

If you’re looking for a first-generation Mustang to fix up, is this car closer to fruition than something else you could buy in the same price range? The mileage is said to be 150,000, so that means either a lot of stuff is worn out or has already been replaced. What’s your take? Another nod goes to “Curvette” for the tip!
