It seems like 2019 is the year for 1968 Corvette Customs to come up for sale. We featured three of them here on Barn Finds earlier this year, two in January and one in March. This particular car was a show car that was wrecked around 1980 and rebuilt into a custom. It can be found for sale here on eBay with a requested opening bid of $50,000! Located in Groveland, California, I’m not sure if the owner is being very realistic with his asking price? Check it out and let us know what you think.
I’m not sure exactly what happened between September 1979 and March of 1980, but this Corvette hit something hard! There are several photos in the ad documenting the smashed car and re-build, which was completed in Sept. 1983. Titled “The Resurrection” by the owner, that pretty much sums it up. The custom treatment on this car is pretty mild compared to some. I’m guessing the 1978 movie Corvette Summer had something to do with influencing the build?
The interior is pretty typical for 1968. Nothing too unusual and nothing too wild. Overall, this car looks like a good candidate for restoration. There is no photo of the engine bay, but it has a 350 cubic inch V8 with 4-speed. The seller says it should run with a tune up and new battery.
Overall, this is a pretty neat car and appears to be a fairly easy restoration. The seller states they are unsure if the tires will hold air. You’d think with a $50,000 asking price, they might want to get it rolling. So after checking out this car, what do you think of the asking price?
“DHENLEY” as in, Don Henley?
Forget the opening bid, that will never happen. No big value, except maybe to the guy who rebuilt the wreck.
I think the opening bid was set after the owner had too much of DSCHENLEY
If it was owned by an Eagle they are hoping star power will get the high price.
Money Pit!!!!!!
There is no way they are going to get that opening price, maybe 10K the fancy restoration it got doesn’t do anything for it other than it was a custom work for somebody. For 50K you can buy a fairly current used Corvette and not have to have it restored!!!
Good luck with that. I see nothing but an Eckler’s front spoiler and some mild fender flares. Nothing special here. With that front end hit, I’d certainly want the frame checked…
50 grand is better spent elsewhere.
Not gonna happen. It’s rebuilt, small block and custom.
Grungy door jams, junk on the carpets, flat left rear, even dust on the steering wheel spokes….. or maybe that’s residue from what this guy’s smoking.
Maybe 5k
She looked pretty good before the facelift, that photo from June of 1980 says it all.
The $50,000 opening bid might be a reason why California might reconsider their recent decision to legalize recreational marijuana!
keep it…no one will pay that price for a neglected wreck
They added way too many zeros! With that front end and flares five thousand would plenty.
Maybe the license is for David Henley or Douglas Henley, no way do I think Don Henley had anything to do with this car.
Way too much earlier damage (likely a salvage or rebuilt title) on this one to even come close to the asking price. Even if you divide that number by 10, I’m not sure it’s worth it.
I expect the seller will have 1 of 2 things happen. Either he’ll hit someone with too much recreational chemicals along with too much money, or he’ll eventually make a planter out of it for his petunia’s.
My thoughts.
Theyre asking too much for what it is & its body mods, I doubt it’d bring 50K even if it was an L-88 as butchered as it sits now. I dont mind modded Corvettes if they’re done tastefully.
So much has been said so far. I went back to the original listing: Pretty sure Don Henley would not put his name on his plate, he would get recognized without it. IF I were a freak fan of Don Henley and Mark Hamill and they both showed up to take 50K out of my hand and take pictures with me and the car….still about $30K too much.
Ad says, hood makes people think that it look like it has a 427. I would rather it have the 427 and be a real 427 car for $50K.
68-72 Stingrays are on my top 3 list of all time favorites. 68 was the WORST of these years being the first year and with MASSIVE changes to the car (IMPROVEMENTS) for 69. 72 saw the first decrease in HP. 69-71 are the ones to have.
Seller justification: “One just like it sold for $75,000 at Barrett Jackson earlier this year.”
No air compressor? Come on these car are becoming worth more money if they are stock, this car might bring $4500.00.
Looks like someone most definitely didn’t Take It Easy with this car.
I have a buddy that has a 1968 Chevy Corvette it’s been hit in the front end like it runs and everything like it could be a easy fix he’s wanting to sell it so if any of y’all be interested get with me tonight or in the morning and we’ll go from there for the phone number that’s a 68 Chevy Corvette t-tops 327 good looking car
