1 of 31: 1968 Dodge Super Bee Hemi

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Super Bee was Dodge’s equivalent of the popular Plymouth Road Runner. As a mid-size muscle car, it was only produced for four years. The rarest of the rare was the Super Bee built with Chrysler’s fire-breathing Hemi V8, which would be discontinued in production cars after 1971. This ’68 Hemi Bee has a 4-speed manual transmission, making it one of a few to leave the factory so equipped. Though the engine is not original to the car, the motor is period-corrected and was rebuilt in 2015. Located in Houston, Texas, this dealer-offered Dodge is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $53,200. Another great Mopar tip brought to us by Larry D!

A check of the VIN provided by the seller verifies that this Super Bee is a real-deal Hemi (J-code). The manual tranny is original to the car as is its Sure Grip rear end. The car was inspected by Galen Govier about 11 years ago and the accompanying report documents the automobile. Of 7,844 Super Bee’s built in 1968, only 125 had the 426 cubic-inch Hemi V8 and just 31 of those were fitted with the 4-speed. We’re told this car is the only one painted in Burgundy Metallic. That paint has been professionally reapplied in recent years.

Other than the powerplant, every effort seems to have been made to keep this Dodge as original as possible. It comes fitted with black-coated Kelsey Hayes wheels that were unique to Hemi-powered Chryslers. Of course, they are wearing NOS Hemi dog-dish type hubcaps. The reported mileage is just 46,000 miles and that may be accurate, but no claims are made either way. Oddly, the seller only offers four photos of a car as classy as this.

The original black vinyl upholstery looks good, and the only flaw is a small tear the seller mentions on the side of the driver’s seat cushion. The factory AM radio has been replaced with an AM/FM unit but has been retained to go with the car. Everything is said to work properly, including the optional tachometer. The eBay ad incorrectly lists the car as having anti-lock brakes and airbags all around. We’re also told it has air conditioning, but Dodge didn’t offer that on its Hemi products.

Good lookin car but the hemi was over rated. Much better off with a more street able engine. In 1968 only the very rich or very foolish actually coughed up the extra change for one.

If I’m not mistaken, this Bee is the first car I took a picture of upon arriving at Mopar nationals circa 1985. I was the first immaculately restored B-Body I’d ever seen.

This sale is a little late to the party. Prices are past the peak. Will be interesting to see if it sells. All dependent on how realistic the seller is. Might not reach $100K. Hope seller is successful with sale. Stay tuned…
