1 of 400: 1980 Porsche 911 SC Weissach Edition

They say the clothes make the man; does the carpet make the car? If you’re an air-cooled collector, you might say that given the rarely seen Porsche 911 SC Weissach Edition is essentially a case of cosmetic upgrades, the carpet makes all the difference. This 1980 Porsche 911 SC is already a rising star in the air-cooled family, long considered the last remaining “bargain” if owning a 911 is on your list of life goals. The Weissach edition was produced in very limited quantities, and as such, commands a strong price, far higher than your average SC. Find this one-of-400 edition listed here on eBay with bids approaching $41,000 and the reserve unmet.

The SC offered stirring performance and all the classic, air-cooled goodness you could ask for, from the sounds of the flat-six to the clumsy manual shifter. The SC can still be found in scruffy but drivable condition for under $40,000, but those days may be coming to an end. A car like this Weissach Edition will never be cheap, given limited edition 911s aren’t exactly common and because most examples remain in very good condition like this car with only 53,358 miles on the clock.  The exterior of the Weissach Edition cars were all the same, painted with a unique “Platinum Metallic” finish.

Now, I have been known to clown on special edition models that are only special due to some mild cosmetic tweaks. In the case of the 911, however, they really did a nice job of adding deep red carpets with matching piping on the desirable sport bucket seats, draped in leather. Most 911 enthusiasts know enough by now that they should preserve this cockpit at all costs, as it is the difference-maker between being a collector’s item or your run-of-the-mill SC. Both of them will fetch good money, but a Weissach Edition with a minty cabin like this will go for so much more. The interior color scheme is officially known as “Doric Grey.”

The 15 inch Fuchs wheels were also painted to match the exterior, and the front end got a unique front chin spoiler. The drivetrain was left alone, which is hardly a bad thing considering what a joy the 3.0L flat-six is the hustle. The listing doesn’t include any details on recent servicing, but the overall condition indicates its previous owner didn’t exactly neglect it. With low miles, a desirable and limited production trim package, and a strong likelihood of continued appreciation, this rare Weissach Edition is a smart buy at anything under $50K.

Pretty car, there’s little wonder as to why the interest is strong with this car.

In the early to mid 70’s my aunt in Switzerland had a Orange 911 Targa with the big spoiler in the back. She always had cars when others in my family did not ( except dad and his Black Mercedes 190, 3 on the tree that he brought back from Germany) My aunt took me one time on the Autobahn and I was plastered to the seat and scared shitless doing 240 km. I’ll never forget that car or my Aunt.
