Unfortunately, this photo may be a bit of a letdown. Of course we all hoped for a 289 V8, but the inline-six was actually a great engine. It produced decent power and was reliable. The issue isn’t that it’s a bad engine. It’s that there was a V8 on the option list, so we all wonder, “what if?” Most people will consider an engine swap but don’t do it. Just enjoy this car for what it is – a fun top-down cruiser!
The seller mentions that the interior needs to be replaced. You could try to clean it, but it’s going to be a monumental task, so it might be easier to rip everything out and replace the carpet and seat upholstery. My only recommendation is to order the new stuff before pulling things apart. We see too many disassembled projects that were likely stalled because the owners were surprised by the cost to replace everything.
It’ll be fun to discover what’s hiding under that thick layer of dust. Fingers crossed that the paint is decent and the rust is minimal. You never know what you will get with a barn find, though, and that is part of the fun. Don’t overpay and hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Hopefully, after replacing the interior and going through all the mechanicals, you’ll have a fun cruiser!
It’s absolutely sacrilegious as to what some people can do to an iconic motor car, even if it’s only a six cylinder it’s still a wonderful piece of Americana!
