The Sport Fury, a snappier version of the Plymouth, arrived in 1959, two years before the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport and three ahead of the Ford Galaxie 500XL. It wasn’t in the mix for 1960 or 1961 but finished out the decade as a convertible starting again in 1962. The seller’s 1966 edition is rare in that just 3,418 copies were produced that year, so only a few hundred might be left. It was a one-owner car before the seller acquired it, and it’s been off the road for 24 years. Like its contemporaries from Chevy and Ford, the Sport Fury was largely about image. But you could pack some punches into it as well. In 1966, a 318 cubic inch V8 was standard fare, and this example has one that still turns over after two decades and 136,000 miles. It also has a floor-shifted TorqueFlite automatic transmission, though the passenger compartment is in a bit of disarray. We’re told the fuel pump may need replacement (could that have sidelined it in 2002?).
The seller says the Plymouth is in rough shape, and we assume rust is one of the problems. The paint appears to be white (though listed as yellow) and the interior a sort of a green. It was a well-equipped car when new with power seats and windows, but no air conditioning (hey, it is a drop-top!). The seller has another restoration project going on, and doing this one, too, would be overkill.
We’re told some small pieces are missing, which we assume are trim. The auto is said to be too nice to use as a donor, so the seller hopes the buyer will decide to redo the Plymouth properly.
