The Continental was one of Lincoln’s most popular automobiles, offered on and off between 1940 and 2020. It competed head-to-head with the Cadillac de Ville for much of that time. One of the slower-selling versions was the 2-door hardtop, which in 1979 (the year the seller’s car was built) accounted for only 17% of Continental production. We’re told this one is largely original and has just 27,000 miles on the odometer. If you like these full-size luxury cars (and can afford the gasoline), does this one float your boat?
Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln Division produced nearly 190,000 vehicles in 1979 of which about half carried Continental badging. This survivor-quality coupe is one of 16,000 or so that were built in ’79 as most buyers preferred the convenience of a 4-door model. These vehicles were mostly unchanged from the prior year except that the 460 cubic inch V8 had been replaced by a 400 to squeeze a few more miles per gallon out of the big vehicles.
The seller (who may be a dealer) says the low mileage on the auto is documented. The dark blue paint on the exterior is from the day the Lincoln was built, with a nice contrasting white vinyl top and light blue leather interior. Mostly low-resolution photos were used for the listing, so they don’t do the car the justice it might deserve.
It appears this is a one-owner vehicle, and it stayed in the garage far more than it was out and about. Everything seems to work as it should and the jack has never been on the ground. We’re told the big beast runs and drives smoothly and the seller is willing to consider trades. The asking price is $15,950 here on craigslist and the Continental can be found in Maple Lake, Minnesota. Thanks, T.J., for another great tip!

I owned 3 in my lifetime. Dove gray gray leather, white blue leather and white with red velour. The white/red was a disappointment. Ultra low miles sat in a backyard of the owners daughter when he went into a nursing home because her boyfriend wanted the garage to work on his project.

Well Frog, that red and white story is doubly sad. The car and the owner having to end up in a care facility. Unfortunately so many seniors end wonderful lives in those facilities. I spent 3 months in one for rehab after a surgery in 2018. What I saw there was definitely depressing. Few ever had visitors and some couldn’t even feed themselves. Two died while I was there. I hope that the owners daughter at least visited him regularly. But have the feeling the boyfriend was her main interest. 😔

The 400 was standard starting in 1978, with the 460 optional. For 1979, only the 400 was offered.

Turbine wheels made this car pop. I hav 2 sets of aluminum rims and center caps that look awesome when buffed and polished.

Nicholas, I too wish I could buy it. Even worse I once owned a 78 Town Coupe and unfortunately sold it due to health problems. But now I am fortunate enough to have a beautiful low mileage 2007 Town Car Signature Limited. The last gasp of traditional American Luxury sedans. This one won’t get away!
I owned several Lincoln Town cars also Rick W. I used them for personal use and for livery services. When the last Town cars were produced I lost interest.
My dad had this car, except dark blue with dark blue vinyl top. It did have the turbine wheels. Big car, even for a two door.
