Not wanting to get left behind, American Motors joined the “pony car wars” in 1968. Their entry arrived as the Javelin, which used some of the compact American’s underpinnings to get the job done. The vehicle would stick around for seven years across two generations, ending its run in 1974 when the seller’s car was built. This one is a runner and has what is thought to be a rare 3-speed manual transmission. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, this project is available here on craigslist for the reduced price of $9,995 (was $2,000 higher).
While the Javelin was never a big threat to the Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro, it outsold Chrysler’s duo in 1973 and 1974. Before AMC decided to exit the scene, they sold 22,500 Javelins in 1974 along with another 5,000 Javelin AMXs. The former saw nearly 4,000 assemblies with the basic 304 cubic inch V8 like the one here. Most of them probably had automatic trannies with an unknown number coming with the no extra charge 3-speed as we see here.
This AMC is a driver with some recent mechanical work having been performed. The list the seller provides would add up to a healthy chunk of change even if done by the seller himself or herself. The open to-do list includes an exhaust leak and maybe a more powerful alternator. But for now, you can jockey the Javelin around town as-is.
The interior and paint need work, with the front clip having been massaged or replaced from another car. Much of the exterior trim and other parts appear to be in the trunk. The seller is a self-professed car builder and enjoys bringing cars back far enough for new owners to complete. This automobile could be a cool alternative in a sea of Mustangs and Firebirds. BTW, thanks for the tip, T.J.!
You don’t need a heater until you do.
Three speed manual was standard. Torque Flight and four speed were optional, although the four speed usually was only available with the larger V8s.
Love these cars. I have a 71 sst in my driveway but I believe this car is overpriced by 5 grand in the shape it’s in.
Seller doesn’t mention why the heater core hoses are disconnected. This car may need a heater core. He also is trying to make it sound like it’s an advantage that this car has the “rare 3 speed manual.” They are rare because everyone preferred a 4 speed or an automatic. I had a 1968 Javelin with the 4 speed back in the early 1970’s.
