302 Upgrade: 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible

The secret of the First Generation Mustang’s success and longevity is two-fold. Ford’s decision to pitch the car to a broad range of buyer tastes and budgets meant it couldn’t build cars fast enough to meet demand. In the following decades, enthusiasts could purchase secondhand examples with a six under the hood fairly cheaply, providing the perfect foundation for a V8 upgrade. That entire scenario encapsulates the life of this 1968 Mustang Convertible. The seller bolted a V8 under the hood, and with a few further tweaks, they slip behind the wheel of a classic that turns heads. However, their days with this classic are numbered, as it is set to be sold. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the Convertible listed here on Craigslist in Granite Falls, Washington. The seller set their price at $28,950 for this turnkey gem.

After performing a major update in 1967, Ford made far fewer changes to its First Generation Mustang for the 1968 model year. Many of these were to comply with evolving safety regulations, while cosmetic changes were quite minimal. The history of this ’68 Convertible is unclear, but its overall presentation is pretty tidy. The paint shines nicely, the panels are straight, and the underside shots confirm it’s rust-free. The color is quite deceptive because it seems to change with the prevailing light. However, I believe it is Tahoe Turquoise, although I am happy to be corrected if I’m wrong. If there are any exterior cosmetic shortcomings, they are too minor to show in the listing images. The contrasting White power top is new and functions correctly. The trim and glass look comfortably acceptable for a driver-grade classic, and the chrome 15″ styled wheels are new. Interestingly, the seller states that they are wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires, but the ones in the photos are definitely from the fine folks at BF Goodrich.

When I first examined the listing images, I shrugged and thought this was simply another Mustang with a 302ci V8 under the hood. However, the seller’s VIN shows an engine code of “T,” confirming that this Convertible’s first owner selected the 200ci six to power their new purchase. While the six would have delivered a respectable 115hp and 190 ft/lbs of torque, the V8 will provide an enormous performance gain. Depending on its specifications, power and torque figures of 230hp and 310 ft/lbs are a realistic expectation. A three-speed automatic transmission sends the power to a new 8″ rear end, while the car also features power steering and upgraded power front disc brakes. The seller doesn’t indicate how well this Mustang runs or drives, but I suspect the news will be positive. There is no evidence of fluid leaks, and the only item causing slight concern is the torn boot on the power steering ram, visible in this shot. Otherwise, I suspect the Mustang is a turnkey proposition.

I believe the seller may have lavished some TLC on this Mustang’s interior. They indicate that the seatcovers are new, and I suspect that the same may be true of the carpet. The fit in the front footwell is slightly out, but I feel that it will stretch into place given time. The door trims are in good order, as are the dash and pad. The car sports an upgraded stereo with speakers mounted in the kick panels, and the tilt wheel will be welcomed by those wishing to tailor their driving position.

This 1968 Mustang Convertible presents well and would appeal to enthusiasts who prioritize enjoyment over originality. I typically prefer my classics unmolested, but under different circumstances, I wouldn’t mind parking this beauty in my garage. The V8 upgrade will improve performance and the car’s appearance, while not pristine, would still receive positive comments wherever it goes. It has been on the market for under a week, but how quickly do you think it will find a new home? More importantly, are you tempted to make it yours?
