348 Tri-Power: 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Have you ever looked at a classic car and struggled to determine its greatest attribute? I’m doing so right now with this 1958 Chevrolet Impala. I can’t decide whether it is the spotless presentation or the enormous load of optional extras. Then again, it could be the Tri-Power V8 under the hood or the simple fact that it is a Convertible and warmer weather is just around the corner. Regardless of what it is, this classic now needs a new home. Located in Bee Spring, Kentucky, you will find the Impala listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding has rocketed to $105,100, but this figure is short of the reserve.

So, where do we start with this Signet Red Impala? It is virtually impossible to find anything to criticize about its presentation. The paint shines beautifully, and like the panels, it appears to be perfect. There is no evidence of any blemishes or bruises and no signs of rust. The panels look wonderfully clean, and the underside shots reveal floors and a frame that don’t even sport surface corrosion. The White soft-top looks as tight as a drum, while the chrome and tinted glass are flawless. Optional extras include fender skirts and a Continental kit, and these combine to give this Convertible a classy appearance guaranteed to turn heads.

The original owner wanted to combine an effortless driving experience with excellent performance, so they decided that this Impala should roll off the line equipped with the 348ci Tri-Power V8, a two-speed Powerglide transmission, power steering, and power brakes. That beautiful V8 should be producing 280hp, which is enough to launch the Impala through the ¼ mile in 16.3 seconds. That represents a fast wind-in-the-hair motoring experience, although the 355 ft/lbs of torque should allow the vehicle to pull effortlessly from low RPMs. The engine bay presentation matches the rest of the car, and this beauty isn’t merely about looks. The seller indicates that the Impala runs and drives well, meaning that the buyer need only wait for some warmer weather before slipping behind the wheel of this classic and hitting the road.

It seems that there are no weak points with this Impala because the interior is stunning. The tri-tone cloth and vinyl seat upholstery show no wear or other problems, while the same is true of the remaining vinyl and carpet. The dash is immaculate, but it is the list of optional extras that is breathtaking. As well as air conditioning, the Convertible features power windows, a power front seat, windshield washers, a Deluxe heater, a tissue dispenser, rear armrest ashtrays, an electric clock, and a factory AM radio with a rear speaker and fader function. You will struggle to find a more heavily optioned ’58 Impala in today’s market.

When you look at this 1958 Impala Convertible and realize that it has already received sixty-two bids, it becomes evident that people like what they see. That begs the question of where the bidding will need to head before it hits the reserve. I wouldn’t expect to see this occur below $150,000, but there may be a clue available elsewhere. I found this car for sale on another site, and the price there is $189,000. For those seriously interested in this classic, there is something worth considering. It could be worth monitoring the auction, and if the car makes reserve, you could slip in a sneaky last-gasp bid. If you secure it below the figure of $189,000, that will leave a few dollars in your pocket to fund some relaxed weekend touring. That sounds like a fine idea to me.

To me things like fender skirts, continental kit etc, are things you would have never or rarely seen when this was a new car. However, for ages whenever I see someone with a high dollar restoration they are always there. I don’t they anything appearance wise.

Well, it is the same seller, his cars are usually displayed with the fencing in the background but for this one, he chose something different.

His Impalas get featured here at BF quite often. Probably the nicest ones out there.

All it lacks is one of these, and for that price it should be included.

I had one of these with tri-power and factory air. It was two-tone red and white with a working convertible top. Sold it for $110k from Arizona to a Californian ten years ago.

This car is worthless. It is so beautiful, if I owned it and one of you guys looked at it dirty, I’d punch all you guys in the nose. This beast is more perfect than when it rolled out of the factory. I could never own such a car. It easily out classes me. BUT, if I had that kind of $ to park, this would be a candidate.
