360 V8 Pony Car: 1971 AMC Javelin SST

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Javelin was AMC’s entry into the fast-growing “pony car” market in 1968. The car would only enjoy one redesign in 1971 before American Motors would exit that space in 1974. One of the changes in ’71 would be the end of the AMX as a standalone 2-seater as it would become a performance edition of the 4-seat Javelin. This SST is how your Javelin came if you ordered the upscale model and it looks like a solid and presentable runner, though not show quality. From Staten Island, New York, this driver is available here on eBay for $13,500 (Buy It Now).

Shoppers could order their ’71 Javelin with either a 304, 360, or 401 cubic inch V8. The seller’s car has the middle choice, which accounted for 5,324 of the SSTs produced that year. This car has been listed on behalf of a friend (I think), so you may be interfacing with two parties to get a deal done. The 360 V8 offers plenty of power for this fairly light car as the lister/seller has managed to squeeze 130 mph out of it on the open highway. That’s even though the engine has a slight tapping sound that always disappears when warmed up (that’s been going on for 10 years). To keep the vehicle in top shape, the tires and brakes are all new.

The body and paint look good, but the photos provided show as many shadows as a car so it’s hard to say if anything is amiss. The interior is original and presents nicely though the black carpeting is turning grey from fading. Check out that photo of the inside of the engine compartment with the hood up. Look at all that excess space. The radiator looks almost halfway back from the front bumper.

We’re told the seller is letting the car go at a bargain price as $18,500 was the intended original ask. A noisy hydraulic lifter, if that’s what’s causing the tapping sound, can be repaired for far less than $5,000, so is this AMC product a bargain? Try to get a ’71 Chevy Camaro at that price. This one could catch some attention at Cars & Coffee as not that many of them are left running around!

I love this body style, especially the bulging front fenders; so cool. Imagine this little car with a 401; that would be a handful for sure.

Doesn’t look in bad shape for that many miles and in the northeast. What’s up with the open pipe under the oil filter though (not being familiar with these engines)?

it’s not open rick it has a pipe plug in the end near the oil pan. inside is a spring and a cap. it’s the oil pressure relief valve.

nice looking ride. not in bad shape at all.
personally i would have liked to see more gauges in that dash from the factory.

Not sure if it would be worth 18000. And hard sell with a ticking lifter at 13000. With this many miles what else is ticking? Or about to knock? 8000 more like it.

If I recall correctly, one of the major “features,” at least in the teenage mind, was the fact that the front seats fully reclined. A very attractive consideration for an age when drive-in theaters were still in vogue.

Look huge, but under 3400lbs. Lots of torque. Nice cruiser , but the tick.. 💣

Price does not seem bad at all for a decent looking car both above and below. Javelins have been increasing in price.
Yes, the tick is a risk, but money can go into the engine instead of interior or rust repair.
According to this website, it’s been for sale for 21 days, so this may be another scam. https://www.iseecars.com/used_cars-t10321-amc-rochester-ny#id=100610550327

The “low” price of 13,500 is now even lower at $12,900.

Worth a shot -> i got rid of a loud tick after car sitting for many days or weeks with engine running cold in a dohc v8 ’91 3000gt by simply switching to green jug 10w30 SN quaker state conventional oil. I heard the tick prior with off brands 10w30 synthetic BLEND oils! I assume the latest SP quaker state(conventional in 10w30 & 10w40, but syn blend in 5w30!) will also silence the ticking. Oddly, the old quaker state defy oil in the red jug with high zinc was a synthetic blend in 10w30 & 10w40 & my ’74 firebird 400 did/does not tick with that 10w40 oil. I am about to run out of it & will try the latest QS all mileage 10w40 conventional low zinc oil – stock valve springs & low compression. Was told by QS that adding a zinc additive voids the warrantee. Will see if low zinc is really an issue – does not matter – motor is orig & has 225k miles.

Any idea who made it? & the lettering is still white, unlike on the front driver’s tire. lol
