37K-Mile 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe

Short garage alert: this 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is 19.5-feet long! This car isn’t for those of you who are nervous about driving a big vehicle in traffic but I’d have to believe that other drivers would get out of your way if you’re behind the wheel of this one. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Troy, Michigan and the current bid price is $8,155 but the reserve isn’t met.

The fifth-generation Lincoln Continental was made for model years 1970 through 1979 with a redesign coming halfway through the run in 1975. The company wanted to make them stand out a bit more from their cousins, the Mercury Marquis. The grille is unmistakable Lincoln gear being similar to the Mark IV series.

The big Lincoln Continentals came in two body styles, the Continental Sedan and Continental Coupe, and in higher trim level versions, the Continental Town Sedan and Continental Town Coupe as seen here. The Town series cars came with a somewhat fancier trim level and they had an opera light, or “coach light”, in the b-pillar as seen on this car. At over two-and-a-half tons, these are not small or light cars. The seller says that the previous owner enjoyed this beautiful Town Coupe for over fifty years with her husband and it has won many first-place trophies at car shows over the years.

This one has beautiful blue velour seats rather than leather and the interior appears to be stock and in outstanding condition. Lincoln referred to these seats as having a “loose pillow” appearance. The rear seating area looks like new and it would be a nice place to relax during a cross-country road trip. The seller says that this car only has 37,200 miles on it which is incredible given its age, and they have provided dozens of nice photos, including many underside photos. It really does appear to be in outstanding condition – although, they do say that it has had one repaint in its lifetime so it isn’t all original.

The split air cleaner hose is the only flaw that I can really see inside or out, top to bottom on this Continental Town Coupe. California cars received a 400 cubic-inch V8 but Continentals made for the other 49 states received a 460 cubic-inch V8 which would have had 208 horsepower and 356 lb-ft of torque. The seller doesn’t give any information at all as to how this one runs but I’d have to believe that it runs as perfectly as the rest of the car looks. For a big luxury car like this Continental, would you rather have a sedan or a coupe?

Good write-up Scotty. What a nice Lincoln. Clean and well-kept. You’re probably not going to be regularly hauling around the family so being a two-door coupe isn’t an issue. Looks classy in dark blue, and I love the blue velour. Cruise in comfort and style, and your arrival will have presence.

Something to be said for these 70’s luxo-barges. They did their jobs well. Perhaps their successor is the very popular full-size luxury pickup. For comparison, a F-150 Super Crew 5.5′ bed (a popular configuration) is almost exactly the same length.

I built a garage a couple of years ago that could swallow this Town Coupe. But, there’s still not enough room!

I remember these well as I got my driver’s license in 1977. One of our neighbors was a exec at Bethlehem Steel in Burns Harbor and drove a corn flower blue Town car coupe like the subject. Additionally, most of the realtors in town were driving 77 to 79 designer series town car sedans. The Lincoln’s we’re more prevalent than the downsized Cadillacs.

Could always double as a B&B rental.

The 2 door coupes aren’t common, but I’ve seen about a dozen come up in the past year. It seems that many of this vintage were stashed away as one didn’t see these for awhile, now there are many dozens available on all marketplaces.
The fuel economy is the only drawback: 10-12 on a good day. GLWTS!

I have had a few of these large two door luxury cars and my problem is trying to find a parking space where I can open the door wide enough so I can get myself out. My 1975 2 door Crown Imperial was a bit longer than the Lincoln Town Coupe. Lincoln made the Town coupe in 1980 & 1981 and only a few made. I am on the hunt for one of these. Want to add it to my Mark VI collection. These are my all time favorite Lincolns. Only Mark series offered in a four door.

As the owner of a 76 continental sedan, I can say this car is in nice shape. Mine has 35000 actual miles and once you drive one of these the feeling of quality and solidity is very apparent. Absolutely love the blue velour seats in this car. Just not much of a leather fan. My 460 powered Lincoln will cruise effortlessly even at today’s highway speeds.

Mine delivers around 10 mpg in town and 13 to 14 on the highway. Most of these had 2.75 gears so they aren’t turning very hard on the highway.

Had a ’78 Givenchy Mark V series – traded a ’77 Vette … 460 in jade with chamois vinyl top, hydro-boost steering, quadrophonic sound, anti-skid brakes, and moonroof … great road car … mileage sucked but who cared … mostly 10mpg but once got 14mpg downhill into LA … had it thirty years until it finally broke down with trans problems and donated it … is now on my bucket list when I can afford it …

Having owned a couple of 77 town car sedans I would love a shot at this coupe. The ultimate in comfort and ride quality. Although any deviation of the steering wheel either left or right would result in dipping and swaying like a sailboat in rough seas. If you kept it straight and true, they’d lull you to sleep.

Auction update: this one ended because it was no longer available.

I am the proud owner of Lincoln 2 doors and 4 doors. If I use the 2 door to go shopping I need three parking spaces due to the size of the doors and how much spade the door needs. I am large and need every bit of space to get out and in. Never expect good mileage around town. They are actually better than a small car at highway speeds when the small car is now beyond it efficiency point, speed wise.
