Regardless of how history evolves, a “first” will always remain in the record book. Such is the case in the automotive world: while there have been many potent muscle cars, the 1964 Pontiac GTO is considered the father of the breed. This ’64 GTO Convertible presents superbly following a frame-off restoration. It has no apparent needs, and with the engine bay housing the optional 389ci Tri-Power V8, it possesses genuine performance credentials. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the GTO listed here on Craigslist in Cosmopolis, Washington. The seller set their price at $70,000 for this iconic classic.

The name John DeLorean conjures up two images. The minds of some will turn to the company bearing his name, and the financial disaster that it created. However, most minds will flash images of the Pontiac GTO, a badge considered the father of the muscle car market segment. Released in 1964, the GTO was an options pack attached to the existing LeMans. This GTO’s first owner selected the Convertible variant, providing a potentially rapid wind-in-the-hair motoring experience. The seller indicates that the vehicle received a frame-off restoration in 1992 and has covered only around 3,000 miles since the work was completed. The process included whipping the panels into shape and eliminating any rust before applying a fresh coat of the car’s correct Gulfstream Aqua paint. The lack of deterioration confirms the builder’s high-end approach, because the paint shines like glass, with no patchiness or evidence of deterioration. The power top in Black fits as tight as a drum, and the trim and chrome are immaculate. The clear glass and Deluxe wheel covers with spinner centers provide the perfect finishing touch.

While all 1964 GTOs were created equal, some are more equal than others. Lifting this car’s hood reveals a 389ci V8, so no surprises there. However, this motor wears the optional Tri-Power induction system, meaning the V8 delivers a factory-quoted 348hp and 428 ft/lbs of torque. It appears that the first owner wished to combine outright performance with a relaxed driving experience, ticking the boxes beside the two-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. The seller falls short when providing information about this classic. They don’t indicate whether it is numbers-matching or how well it runs and drives. However, the listing images paint a positive picture, and I would expect any GTO within this price bracket to be a turnkey proposition.

This GTO’s interior appointments demonstrate my belief that the first owner set one eye on comfort. It might be a muscle car, but with air conditioning, power windows, a power driver’s seat, a tilt wheel, a console, and an AM/FM radio, it is well equipped in a 1964 context. It also demonstrates the consistency of this classic, because it presents superbly. Trimmed in Black vinyl, there is no wear, deterioration, or evidence of abuse. The dash, pad, and console are excellent, and the bright trim perfectly contrasts the predominantly dark interior, preventing it from looking somber.

With modern vehicle manufacturers focusing on electrification and zero-emission options, it seems that the days might be numbered for muscle cars in showrooms. Should that day come, classic car enthusiasts will mourn the passing of the genre. This 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible offers potential buyers a double positive. It provides the chance to preserve an iconic high-performance vehicle, and with Pontiac now a distant memory, the buyer can protect a slice of the marque’s heritage. That is why buying this GTO could be a wise long-term strategy.
