In 1977, GM substantially downsized numerous cars, and the Ford Thunderbird also lost some length from its rather large body, which measured 225 inches from front to back the previous year. However, it was shortened by only just over half a foot, so it still looked big on the outside. Ford fans approved of the changes and its fresh appearance, with more than 300,000 units sold in 1977 alone, and a significant price drop from ’76 probably also helped entice a few more buyers. This 1977 Ford Thunderbird here on Craigslist could probably get by as a driver with little work, but it also seems like a good candidate to take to the next level. These T-Birds were all over the roads in the late seventies, and while I remember seeing them in a variety of colors, I don’t recall many being yellow. However, after checking this one out, I’m sort of a fan, especially with the 2 different sections of white vinyl tops. Although a few areas aren’t fully visible, the sheet metal we can see looks straight and solid, and the paint doesn’t look too bad either. However, it appears the hood has been replaced, so it might be time to consider respraying the entire exterior.
In 1976, the Thunderbird only had one engine choice, but when it’s a 460 V8, who needs options? Unfortunately, as the Thunderbird transitioned from the sixth to the seventh generation, the 460 got lost in the shuffle. The three-size V8s now included a 302, a 351, or a 400, and thankfully, this one has the latter. The seller provides few details, but says it runs well and the automatic transmission shifts properly. It’s good to see the A/C equipment still intact, and it’s reported to still be delivering cold air inside.
The interior seems decent as well, maybe not as fancy as some ‘Birds, but it does have a power driver’s seat. I’m guessing the odometer is showing a hundred thousand miles short of the actual total, but for a car nearing 50, that’s not excessive. It sounds like the seller is ready to do a package deal on this Thunderbird and his 1973 Gran Torino, which is also in the same listing, and says he might be willing to trade them for something cool. What are your thoughts on this one? Would you stick with the yellow, or repaint it some other color?
Like the much maligned Mustang 2, this was a sad period for the once stylish T Bird.
Even though I never was a fan of these T-Birds, mainly because they looked too big and very boxy, this one looks like it’s in very decent shape. As long as it’s in good running condition $3000 sounds like a fair price.
Take the T Bird name off it, call it an LTD and your right, a decent price for a bit of smooth riding luxury with some bsllz.
I think it’s reasonably priced and in pretty good shape, and nicely optioned, too. That said, I dislike yellow.
