A reduction in size was in store for several popular GM offerings for 1978, and the Oldsmobile Cutlass was no exception, with the fifth-generation cars losing significant length and weight compared to their predecessors. Fortunately, even after the changes, the Cutlass remained one of the best-selling autos in America for the next several years. However, there’s still something about the prior body style that remains captivating to this day, even if the car happens to be a sedan, such as this 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme here on Craigslist. This Olds is said to have spent its entire life in California, and it’s currently residing in Atherton, not far from San Francisco. This one’s priced at $11,000, and we’d like to thank reader Tony Primo for the tip here!

The seller reports that he is the second owner and that both caretakers have always kept this car inside, and combined with such a favorable climate, this one still looks exceptionally well-preserved on the outside. I don’t recall noticing very many of the 4-door examples from this era with the cool slanted grille up front, but after seeing this one, it makes me wish they had all been manufactured this way. The seller states no rust is present and that it’s never even been driven in the rain, with the original paint lines from 1977 still visible.

Stepping inside seems to validate the claim that this Oldsmobile is a time capsule, with the interior looking much like it would have when the car was new. Given the condition, it’s easy to believe the reported mileage of 41,000 is accurate. There are also several nice features that weren’t always found on most cars back then, such as power windows, seats, and even a way-cool CB radio. More good news is that everything on this one is listed as working.

The positives continue under the hood, as in the bay is the largest engine available for ’77, a V8 of the 403 variety. The seller states that this car runs and drives like new, and the underside is described as being clean enough to eat off of. Other than it being a sedan, I’m not finding much to criticize here, so it’ll be great if someone in the market for a 4-door example finds this one. Any thoughts to share regarding this 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?

Love it Stephens. Somebody ordered a great hwy car here.
I had a 77, no 77 cutlass had the sloped front end as this has. Looking at 76 S model here.
Under the hood was a pleasant surprise. It seemed any 4 door Cutlass had the 260 V8 in it. Love that it has a 403. Very clean!!! This is a Creampuff!!!
My experience is that most had the 350. I have like 25 of them, 2drs, 4, drs, wagons. A Cutlass S might be more likely to have the 260. In 1978 they were 260 Olds, or 305 Chevies, some were the Buick V6
This isn’t a Cutlass Supreme. They all had the non sloping front end. This front end seems to be from a 442.
You make a very good point Alero. I looked up 1976 Cutlass Supreme and Salon 4 door images and they have the same nose as this one here ( like the 442), in ’77 they did not like you mentioned. Maybe the seller has the wrong year on his Craigslist ad. It Wouldn’t be the first time we saw that happen on Craigslist.
This is a 1977 Cutlass Supreme. 403 V8 introduced that year. I suspect this was in a minor front end accident. The front bumper and header were replaced. That is why there’s a slant nose and grilles The front bumper should have bumper guards, like the rear bumper. I don’t mind this anomaly – it looks good.
I agree. I noticed the different front end as soon as I saw the post. But once I had looked through the pictures, I could see that this is in fact a Supreme. The dead giveaway was the split front bench seat with the center armrest. If this was a Cutlass S, even if the bench seat was split, it wouldn’t have had the center armrest. That wasn’t even optional on the S. And the door panels would also have been different – they wouldn’t have had the pull straps over the armrest. But the non correct front end wouldn’t have mattered to me. It’s still a beautiful car. And it’s incredibly well optioned – the 403 engine, the factory CB radio, even pulse wipers. When do you ever see those options on any of these cars? If I didn’t have too many cars already, I’d buy this one in a heartbeat…
The doors are from a 73-75 cutlass .the nose is from a 73-75 also so I’d say this is a 73-75 olds
@Oakster. Yet the dash and steering wheel are from a ’77. A real Frankenstein that begs an explanation.
Oakster – The 4-doors (and wagons) retained the “’73-’75” door scalloping through ’77. As other have noted the dash vents, steering wheel, and 403 engine indicate ’77
Sir I do believe you are correct. That front nose does give it some splash.
That motor will most likely still be running when the rest of the car is unusable.
They were probably the best motor ever built in this country and perhaps the world.
The 403 with siamesed bores? Are you joking? If you mean the 350 CID versions I’d agree with you.
Unique car here
Please Google it. Its for the Cutlass S.
Please Google it. Its for the Cutlass S. The Y 76 got upgrades usually found on the Supreme.
My folks had one of these when I was a kid. I believe ours was a ’76. It was a dark blue metallic with white interior. It had the same style front end as this one does. I know it had a v8, but don’t remember which one. Pretty sure it was not a 403 like this one though. I recall, even as a kid, that it was comfortable to ride/travel in.
Nicely optioned car in beautiful shape, I wish I could buy it!
This looks like a 76. I never realized the 4-door got a different grille than the coupe.
The Supreme also would have had a hood ornament. It has Supreme everything but the header/hood.
Cool Cutlass with great features. Divided seat, power options and a 403. Just why does a Supreme have an S front header?
My friend’s dad had a ’75 in the same exact color scheme as this one. Except for the front end treatment, it looks identical to what I remember, including the dash layout.
I could be wrong though, thanks to the passage of 50 years.
Oakster, the doors on the Cutlass Colonnade 4 doors and wagons were the same from 1973-1977. The 2 door Cutlass’s changed the doors in 1976. Oldsmobile had to fabricate special front fenders to match the doors on the 4 doors, so in 1976-77 the front fenders are different 2 door to 4 door.
So we’ve circled completely around to say this simply say that this is a ’77 Supreme with a ’76 S header.
No they were not 73-75 cutlass had the scallop on the doors and fenders and quarters 76-77 they were gone
The 4 door models all had the scallops until 1977. Go to the internet and look. You won’t find a 76-77 4 door without the scallops.
this front end was available on the 77 supreme4dr. it’s a clean rocket here and packing a 403. be nice if it could be bought cheaper
77 supreme 76 S header well preserved nice example well equipped .
