426 Hemi Power! 1966 Plymouth Satellite

Chrysler’s B-body cars finally became real mid-size products in 1965 after the company brought back the C-body for the full-size Plymouths and Dodges. The Satellite joined the Belvedere family as an upscale intermediate, and the autos received a refresh of their styling in 1966-67. The seller has a nice ’66 Satellite with a 426 Hemi, but that was added later to replace the factory 383 cubic inch V8. But its 4-speed is said to have come from the assembly plant. A solid driver with just a few cosmetic oopsies, this hot Mopar is in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is available here on eBay. The opening bid of $45,000 has had no takers so far, and there’s a reserve on top of that.

The Satellite would become a popular model and eclipse the Belvedere as Plymouth’s mid-size forerunner by the 1970s. In its early days, the Satellite was only available as a 2-door hardtop or convertible, and the Sport Satellite model didn’t arrive until 1968 (contrary to the seller’s listing). A 318 V8 was standard, but the rest of the Plymouth roster was optional,l including the Street Hemi like the one found here.

We’re told the odometer reads 28,000+ miles, so we assume it has turned over. And we don’t know how many miles the Hemi sports. The seller says the engine swap was “done right,” which would imply the suspension was beefed up to accommodate for the additional weight of the beastly motor. It runs quite well and should smoke the tires somewhat even though the car has posi-traction.

The body is okay, with several little dings that the seller has highlighted. But the dark green paint may be ready for a do-over. And the tan interior is nice, but not perfect, either. A new set of tires rounds out the package, so you should have a turnkey ride here – depending on the final price the seller is willing to take.
