44k Genuine Miles: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS

This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS has been in the same family since new. It was bought as a special-order gift for the family’s mother, and after 51-years of ownership, it is now destined to head to a new family. It features some nice options and is finished in a color that wasn’t on the Camaro Color Chart for that year. You will find the Camaro located in Troy, Michigan, and listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding on the Camaro has currently reached $18,100, and the reserve hasn’t been met at this stage.

This really is a very pretty car. It underwent a repaint at some point in the 1980s, as the original paint was beginning to look tired. The repaint was completed in Metallic Green, which was a special order for this particular car in 1968. The repaint has held up very nicely, and while the owner says that it isn’t of show quality, it remains extremely presentable. The black vinyl top and white striping also appear to be in really nice condition, as does the distinctive RS grille. The owner provides a fantastic array of photos of the Camaro, and the underside of the car looks to be nearly as good as new. There is barely a sign of even surface corrosion, and there doesn’t appear to be any rust in either the floors or anywhere on the body of the Camaro, which still sports all of its original steel.

The Black Custom Interior is completely original, and while it isn’t faultless, it isn’t very far off it. There is a single crack in the original wheel, and it looks like there is some wear on the carpet. This wear is on the driver’s side on the transmission tunnel. I suspect that someone’s foot has rubbed there while operating the accelerator over the years, as that could account for this type of wear. Beyond that, the interior is as close to perfect as you are likely to find in an original Camaro of this age.

Lifting the hood on the Camaro reveals an L48 350ci V8, a Powerglide transmission, and power steering. This is all original, and numbers-matching. The owner does say that the car has covered a genuine 44,000 miles since new, and judging by the significant collection of documentation that is included with the car, I suspect that he will be able to verify this. The Camaro hasn’t had a lot of use over the past few years but does get started and driven occasionally to keep things working properly. The owner has enough confidence in the car’s mechanical state that he welcomes a mechanical inspection of the car for prospective buyers.

When it comes to finding good, original, and unmolested 1st generation Camaros, this one stacks up pretty well. It is a low-mileage example that displays all the hallmarks of a classic that has been treated with care and respect. It is a car that would easily attract its fair share of attention wherever it went, and I really hope that its destiny is to go to a family who will treat it with the same sort of respect for at least another 51-years.

    Beautiful. The only thing missing next to me behind the wheel is the Z/28 badges on the fenders. ;-)

      I remember seeing Camaro’s in the 1980’s that had both SS and Z28 emblems. I didn’t know much, but knew not to talk to them about their cars. I figured you would get nothing but lies as to how it was a special order, one of one, built for some unnamed person that had connections.

      Hopefully it’s as clean as it’s advertised to be. The dealer has it listed for $39,900 on their website.

    Manual brakes and a Slip-N-Slide…this is a very oddly equipped car. Seems to have the quirky GM fuel gauge that reads overfilled, too.

    There are only a few things wrong with this car. (1) Too far away, (2) Price is too high for my pocket book and (3) NOT MINE!! (he says, pounding his fist on his desk)

    It’s nice to see one that was well cared for instead of a shell with a bunch of full milk crates full of parts!! The color is sharp!! Not the most desirable power plant but there are more aftermarket parts for the 350 Chevy than any motor ever made!!! It would definitely be a little nicer with the third pedal and 4 speed!!! Nice looking car however!!!

    So many Camaros have had the stripes repainted incorrectly. There are templates available, and this car was not exactly a concours, but still! The door pieces were a stick-on tape you can still get that would have made it closer to correct, but the front corners of the stripe should be more square. It is amazing when I see cars at Mecum and Barrett-Jackson that have had multi-thousand dollar restorations and the stripes are wrong, it looks like a bad haircut. Painting and striping are a lot of work, it doesn’t take that much more effort to get it right.

    I freely admit that overall I prefer a 67 or 68 Mustang equipped like this but this…..WOW! Off to buy that winning lottery ticket. Lol. Of course I’d need to buy a different house with a really nice garage to keep this sweetheart in. It deserves it! It would probably see 3ish K miles a year so I wouldn’t change a darn thing about it. Enjoy it like it is, maintain it, leave a sweet car for someone else to enjoy just as much when I kick the bucket.

    For a classic Camaro, the RS/SS would be the only one I would consider. Would prefer A/C, and a few more amenities. Beautiful car, and I really like the color !

    This camaro is certainly sitting up quite high even in front! Good for oil changes & speedbumps & crappy roads, i guess. Some people have been complaining about some 1st gen aftermarket front coil springs not only raising the front up too high, but also giving a rougher ride. Not sure if any replacements are made in the USA anymore, or match exact orig specs.
    Why change all 4 springs with such low mileage?
    InSANE it has bumper guards & stripes, FULL delux interior & vinyl roof but no disc brakes!? Not even POWER drums?

    Bought my 68 Camaro in ’68 same color(Dealer called it British Racing Green) sight unseen 327. automatic, tac in the clock, gauges on the console. no vinyl top, floor mats.. $2,840. Loved seeing this one. Sure miss mine
