67k Mile Stunner: 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

In the late 1960s, Detroit wanted to make a name for itself in Trans Am racing (Sports Car Club of America). At the time, SCCA limited Trans Am engine displacement to 302 cubic inches, which prompted the Chevy Camaro Z/28 in 1967. Ford followed up with the Mustang Boss 302 in 1969. Offered for just two model years, the Boss 302 was a rare commodity when new, and more so today. The seller has a sweet 1970 edition in Woodruff, SC, available here on eBay. The current bid is $50,100, but the reserve is unmet and likely much higher.

The key to the Boss 302 was its engine, which was nothing like the grocery-getter 302 cubic inch V8 that you found in the rest of Ford’s products. It was built to perform and had 290 horsepower to back it up. To satisfy SCCA requirements and also keep up with street demand, 1,628 Boss 302s were produced in 1969 with the number expanded to 7,014 in 1970. After that, SCCA relaxed its rules, and the Boss 351 came along in 1971 for use in the program.

This Boss is described as being “very original” but that’s not really the case. Since the paint has been redone (quite nicely, we might add) and the engine transmission, and rear end have been “gone through” so that sounds more like a partial restoration. But the machine is numbers matching, a huge plus for those in the market. The mileage is said to be only 67,000 and we suspect not abused.

What is original is the interior, which is in fine shape, sans one bit of loose stitching in one of the seats. The car’s original radio was replaced by a “vintage” cassette player some time ago. Adding a touch of originality are the floor mats, which date to Day 1. The Ford rides on Magnum 500 wheels with non-radial tires. From all indications, this has to be one of the nicest Boss 302s left and probably number less than the Z/28’s still out there.

The term “original” is probably one of the most often misused adjectives I see in sale ads.

Beautiful Boss and a really pretty color combo. For a car of the caliber, it’d have been nice to see a few pics of the undercarriage though.

Ranks right up there with the term mint condition!

In this case, I agree with the term original, the way it looks. However, if I were a buyer, I would withhold ultimate judgement until a Mustang expert laid eyes and hands on it.

I am glad that the seller did not use the term “survivor”. That one gets far more abused and would not apply here.

That is the standard style steering wheel for 1970. The 3 spoke rim blow style wheel was an option.

This style steering wheel was used on many Fords of this time period, even certain Pintos.

True, but the cool rear spoiler makes up for it. (Chuckle)

Actually, there probably is no way to prove that it came with the car (dealership added)
