20 Years Stored: 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider

This 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce recently emerged from 20 year storage in what looks like a shipping container, and the convertible appears reasonably sound for its many years off the road. Excuse the seller’s spelling, but aside from that oversight, this Alfa sports the larger 2.0L powerplant and comes with a factory hardtop. Find it here on craigslist for $3,500 or best offer.

The white letter tires are an interesting look and probably not factory. The body shows evidence of work at the nose section, but the seller claims there is no rust. The luggage rack is unfortunate, but also a period staple. The soft top looks surprisingly good, and a factory hardtop is included with the sale. Aside from a solid detailing and new tires, I don’t see too much cause for concern here.

The interior looks quite good as well. The three-spoke wood steering wheel is a must-have in an Alfa of this vintage, and I’m shocked at how clean the cabin is for a car that was stored two decades. The seller notes it “ran when parked” but is currently not running. This model year saw the departure from the pretty slim chrome bumpers to these black rubber units to contend with increasingly stringent U.S. safety standards. If you can find a set of European-style bumpers to swap to, do it.

The earlier cars with the aforementioned bumpers and enclosed headlights are certainly the more desirable models, but the later examples also introduced changes that made them more livable on a day-to-day basis. This example looks solid and hasn’t been pillaged for parts, so perhaps there’s good value here either for a restoration project or parts car. The price seems reasonable, but it does fall into the unfortunate price bracket where not much more money will get you a more complete car.

A wood framed storage container with dirt floors? No… This car was stored in a tin shed.

Lets see, the SPICA pump will need to be rebuilt due to the old gas, the main pump will need to be replaced and add a new tank. Lots of rubber will need to be replaced. And it will keep going.
I get Alfa’s like this for under a grand and usually part them. While series 2’s are going up in value you can get a really nice one for under 9 k
