All Original: 1970 Plymouth Fury II

The Plymouth Fury was a fairly popular choice among buyers looking for a full-size car in 1970, with over 260,000 of them rolling off the assembly line just for that one year alone.  While the 2-Door varieties generally seem to be preferred by collectors and enthusiasts nowadays, especially the Sport models, it’s still kind of fun to see a survivor-type sedan out there every now and then, such as this 1970 Plymouth Fury II here on eBay.  I’m not sure whether the 4-Door examples have reached the status where the demand exceeds the supply, guessing not, but if that’s the kind of ride you’re looking for this one may be worth checking out.  It’s been in Monterey, California since new, and can be yours for $6,500, or perhaps less if the seller chooses to accept your offer.

The story goes this was a one-owner vehicle that had sat since 2011 when the seller acquired it and was originally driven by a Defense Language Institute professor in Monterey.  Since then, he’s performed some work on the car, although his focus was mainly on the mechanics.  The seller says the body is straight and accident-free, with the quarter panel on the driver’s side seeming to show a bit newer finish than other parts on the outside, but the rest of the patina seems consistent.  There’s also some rust in a few areas, and thankfully we are provided with a 17-minute video where nearly every nook and cranny of the entire Plymouth is shown.

Things in the engine bay are thought to be original, with quite a bit of maintenance performed such as a new timing chain and cover installed, a new water pump, and new fuel lines, plus the gas tank was also replaced.  One item the seller points out that could still use some work is the carburetor, but we are treated to a test drive during the video and the engine seems to actually perform pretty well, at least when the car gets up to speed.  There’s no word on whether or not the transmission has received any recent attention.

The interior is overall looking decent, with the seller pulling up the dash cover on the video to reveal a few cracks, but at least it doesn’t look like anything in there has been tampered with, including what’s likely the factory radio still intact.  We also get a few photos from the underside, which seems to be fairly solid with a pair of air shocks that look like they were installed decades ago!  I realize a Fury II sedan may not be for everybody, but this one’s kind of cool in its own right and I do appreciate the car’s originality.  What’s a reasonable price for what you’re getting here?

Mike, is that correct that 750,000 Furys were sold in 1970?

Nope. I missed it by about half a million. Thank you for catching that! More like 263,131 if Concept Carz is correct.

Am I missing something or do they fail to mention anywhere in the ad which V8 this car has? 750000 does seem high, but the Impala sold over 1 million units per year in the US in 1965 and 1966, so it is conceivable…

Nice Plymouth Fury with a 318 and looks like a 904 trans. Mileage would be correct for the condition of the interior. The body with baked paint and I hope the dash is ok. I would get a respray of the original color get the bumpers rechromed the rear bumper fixed. Clean up underneath the vehicle and that’s it. Being nice cruiser. Good luck to the next owner.😊
