If I had a Top-10 Best Car Names List, this 1969 Mercury Marauder X-100 would have to be somewhere in the mix. This two-owner Marauder X-100 can be found here on eBay in Las Vegas, Nevada. There is an unmet opening bid price of $8,000 and no reserve after that. Let’s check out this beautiful beast.
As a higher-performance version of the Mercury Marauder, the Marauder X-100 offered buyers more performance and more style. It was one of the longest cars of its type and I would argue, one of the most beautiful. And no, Steve McGarrett didn’t drive one. The X-100 version of the Marauder came standard with rear-fender skirts and I know that isn’t a look that everyone is on board with, but I love it.
There’s the view! Gorgeous. That famous flat-black painted rear end and those flying buttress C-pillars – outstanding. The matte finish was standard but owners could delete it if they wanted to and we’ve seen examples of that here at Barn Finds. The Mercury Marauder X-100 is the automotive equivalent of Cary Grant, Chuck Norris, and a finely-tailored suit all rolled into one. With AC, this car is worth just over $8,000 in #4 fair condition according to our friends at Hagerty.
The interior photos and some of the others are somewhat grainy and have a few strange color shifts going on in them. But, what we can see of the interior sure looks good. The Marauder X-100 was made for two short years, 1969 and 1970, as second-generation Marauders. The Marauder name would go away until the 2003/2004 revival and those cars are beginning to ramp up in value, so jump on board now while you can still pick one up for reasonable money. Back to this beauty and beast.
Speaking of a beast, this is Ford’s 429 cubic-inch V8 which had 360 horsepower and 480 ft-lb of torque. This is a 4,400-pound car so it needs all of that power. This one has new plugs, wires, and a new “re-manufactured era correct” carburetor, according to the seller. It was purchased from the original owner in 2017 so it’s just had two owners over the last 51 years. Are there any fans of the big, beautiful Marauder X-100 out there? Here’s another example of a car which, back in the day, didn’t interest me. But today, I think it oozes style and coolness and presence. Good writing Scotty…. “Cary Grant, Chuck Norris, and a finely-tailored suit.” This one looks quite good. I’m sure there would be many folks at Cars and Coffee who would want to examine this fine (but rarely seen) example of a classy car of its day.

Car names: for me, it’s Super Duty (and also Power Wagon). I remember growing up being impressed when a Ford Super Duty heavy truck pulled up to the oil field job site. You knew it meant business.
Trucks usually had the best names. Chevrolet Viking and Apache are 2 of my favorites
fun fact I just googled.. a 2015 dodge challenger hellcat with manual transmission weighs 4,449 pounds so it is actually 50 pounds heavier than this car

Today’s offerings lack luster, mediocre and uninspiring
The only way this beauty could be any better (for me) would be to have buckets and the console! Always thought these were beautiful cars back in the day, and I STILL feel the same way! GLWTA! :-)
If you like ’em big, this is the car for you. Beautiful car in outstanding original condition and fairly rare with only 5,635 X-100s made in ’69. Not a lot of details from the seller but it seems the original owner took good care of it. It This Mercury has a lot going for it and the mileage is reasonably low at 80,000. It’s disappointing the seller didn’t post better quality pictures especially since there’s not a lot of info in the auction text. I like this Mercury a lot, it’s a well-optioned, all original big block car that’s not often seen these days. Too bad it won’t fit in my garage.
You know, through the years, Mercury made some nice cars, but this, without a doubt, is what I consider, the nicest Mercury ever. Not some neck snapping monster, but roll like thunder, it would. The fact there’s no bids for such a beautiful car, tells me, modern day collectors don’t know their whoo-haa from a hole in the ground. Mercury is extinct. If there ever was a modernish Mercury to collect, it’s this. I just don’t get the modern old car hobby today or the people who participate in it. No interest for a X-100 Mercury? Preposterous!

Best car name ever is FIREDOME.
I had a Robin egg blue one that would fit 6 300 pound plus men in it with room to spare. The gas gauge didn’t work, and we decided to put our jeans and boots on and go dancing. We ran out of gas and pushed it past a sherriff who had pulled a car over. Nobody said a word as we inched by his patrol car. The look on his face was priceless.
We had a Red One on our lot for over a year. I loved that car!

Awesome car!! My late neighbor, Harold Steincamp, had one when I was 6 years old in 1972. Even then there was something about that car that caused me to think is was unique and special. Very cool.
And yes, most all of my earliest childhood memories involve cars!

There’s a red one of these in Jacksonville, it (apparently) has/had the flat black delete. I have never seen it move but I suppose it could be saved for those Cars and Coffee weekends.
I think I prefer the same year Ford’s dashboard, though, with its “jet cockpit” wraparound the driver, instrument panel. But yeah, this sure beats it’s competitors for sex appeal.
Massive Merc with great lines, don’t lIke the rear fender skirts all that much, outside of that it’s a sweety. Plenty of power but it’s no cobra jet 429, not that it couldn’t be however.
Favorite car names? Oh heck, there’s so many…Hemi’cuda, BOSS429, Six pack, Z/28…I mentioned Eliminator in another post and have always thought that was a great name Mercury should have used more often, like the crazy funny car from back then.
Not seen too frequently, you could get bucket seats with a console and horseshoe snifter. While the gauges and tach (sitting on the steering wheel) aren’t standard, the buckets and console are more in keeping with the personal luxury car of the period (think Riviera, Mark III, etc.).
