Next to the fastback, the convertible body style is perhaps the most desirable of the original Ford Mustangs (1964 to 1966). The seller has one from 1966, but it’s a project in various states of disassembly. Some new sheet metal has been added, and more is waiting to be installed. While it’s a 6-cylinder pony car, the seller has a V8 that may be included in the sale (we think). Located in a garage in Buffalo, Missouri, this collection of bits and pieces is available here on craigslist for $6,500.
The 1966 model year was a record for Mustang sales at 607,000 units. 72,000 of them were convertibles, so they weren’t rare when new and perhaps not so much today, either. A 200 cubic inch inline-6 was standard in all Mustangs in 1966. When paired with an automatic transmission like this one, the car offered decent performance and fuel economy (I owned one, a coupe). These vehicles used 4-lug wheels while the V8s had 5-lugs (why did Ford bother to differentiate; why not use 5-lugs on all of them?).
We assume the seller of the ’66 drop-top here is a Mustang fan, as more than one of them is in the photos. We don’t know the history of this ragtop or what its original color was due to the substitution of body panels (to help eradicate rust?). You’ll find new metal in the rear quarters and trunk, and a new hood and fenders are coming along for the buyer to deal with. The hardware for the convertible top frame is there.
Should you want to upgrade this vehicle to a V8, the seller has one (289?), another C4 automatic transmission, V8 suspension parts, and another rear differential. But we’re not told if extra coin is required to include them. Humpty Dumpty here needs a lot of attention, and its degree of completeness is uncertain.
