In the mid-1960s, when the muscle car movement took off, Pontiac had the GTO, Chevrolet the Malibu Super Sport, Oldsmobile the 4-4-2, and Buick the Gran Sport (or GS). No less powerful than the others, the GS was intended to be the luxury version of the crop befitting Buick’s place in the GM fold. This 1970 GS has been sitting forever and is far from complete. Available in Ronkonkoma, New York, and here on Facebook Marketplace for $800, you’ll need to decide if there are enough parts here to assist with another GS project.
Some of a 455 cubic inch V8 is still in the car, but it’s not numbers matching. The GS had a 350 V8 as standard, so the 455 came with the various Stage upgrades you could make. The cowl tag is largely illegible, so it won’t be much help in determining how this Buick was assembled 56 years ago. The seller says the TH-400 (?) automatic transmission and rear end should be good, so that’s a positive sign.
The body is very rough, and it looks as though blue paint may have dominated back in the day. The front clip is missing, as is the bumper and assorted hardware at the rear. The interior seems to have been picked clean, and one large hole is present in otherwise clean floorboards. Buick built 20,000 GS Skylarks in 1970, and half of them came with a 455 motor.
This is a project that the seller admits to never getting around to doing much with. It has been sitting for years (and perhaps longer). The original registration went missing, so the buyer will have to be happy with a bill of sale. Which is probably fine if your goal is to go harvesting for parts. The seller was going to part out the car but has since decided that he’d rather see it gone in one fell swoop. Our thanks to Barn Finder Zen for the tip!
All this stripper needs is a good, solid pole to dance with.
