Cheap Drop-Top: 1993 Chrysler LeBaron

The LeBaron name appeared on a variety of Chrysler products over the years, from 1931 through 1941 and again from 1955 until 1995. It stood for luxury regardless of the platform and complimented the high-end Imperial in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1987-95, the LeBaron was a personal luxury car using a derivative of the K-car front-wheel-drive platform and was offered as either a coupe or convertible (not targeted at families). This ’93 LX edition looks to be in great overall condition and the seller has priced it as cheap wheels at $2,995 in Portland, Oregon, and here on craigslist. Thanks for the tip, Bret P!

For 1993, the LeBaron received a minor facelift, which included going from hidden headlamps to less costly (but still stylish) flush-mounted replaceable-bulb peepers, which were becoming all the rage. Three engine choices were available, with the middle choice being a 2.5-liter inline-4 (as in the seller’s car) that was no longer turbocharged. That model year would be the last for the coupe, with the convertible continuing as a solo body style for another couple of years. Fewer than 27,000 copies of the drop-top were produced in ’93.

This LX (the top trim level) drop-top has 129,000 miles on it, which you may or may not consider low mileage although the seller does. The body, paint, and interior all look quite nice, evidence of it being garage-kept when not in use. As you would expect for a luxury car, the convertible top is power-operated, and the automobile comes with a cover for when the top is left down.

In recent months, the LeBaron has been treated to new drive belts and a new timing belt tensioner, so hopefully, it’s good for a lot more miles. We’re also told that the Chrysler has a new DEQ which is some sort of emissions control device. While this might not be considered a classic car, it’s nearly 30 years old, and – for the price – it would be a cheap way to acquire a convertible to show off at Cars & Coffee.

I like the car and I like the price. I don’t like being a continent away. I don’t know if K cars will ever be a great investment but a LeBaron convertible is a reasonable idea and you can use it to go to work too.

This car would be welcome at any radwood type car show and I wish I could afford it.

I never thought these were bad cars. They seemed pretty sturdy and there was certainly a lot worse out there during this time.

My favourite K-car. I’d drive it.

Chrysler always seems to have done a good job with their seats, always stylish looking and always comfortable. The LH cars had some of the best seats I’ve ever sat in.

Especially when clad in rich Corinthian leather.

I took my darling late bride to Tijuana for her birthday in 1992 in one of these, but it was blue. I had to stop at a Chrysler dealership in San Diego to find out where the headlight switch was. The designers did an excellent job of hiding it.

Back when I was in college, I worked at a rental car company. We had these in droves for the Summer crowd. Most were saddled with the NA 2.5 wheezing engine. We also received a smattering of the turbo versions and they were a riot. Floor these and you would experience gentle acceleration until the turbo kicked in. Then hang on for dear life as the car fought for grip and struggled to stay in the lane. The later ones we received were the Mitsubishi sourced 3.0L v6 that was smooth but not as fun as the turbo.

These are the ultimate bargain for someone who wants a collector car, that is fun, reliable, useful, and inexpensive to start and to keep going. I think it is the ultimate bean car design, and either the turbo or the V6 will make it a blast to drive. And, if it gets dented in the supermarket parking lot, so what. You did not pay a fortune to acquire it, and there are more out there. Color wise I prefer the dark green outside and the tan leather inside, but I would not kick this one out of my garage!

The term ” collector car” and 1993 Chrysler LeBaron should not be used in the same sentence.

Buyers need to be aware that on some convertibles, early ones especially, that the top side rails will bend out of shape if used too many times–an expensive repair. I owned a 1989 LeBaron convertible and the top became unusable. When I sold it, I showed the buyer how I had to have the top bolted in place to make certain it would stay in place.

Don’t know why they didn’t disclose that Ron Burgundy was the original owner. They’d easily get double.
