Clone Project: 1970 Pontiac Firebird

The second generation of the Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1970. The introduction was delayed a little and many refer to the 1970 Firebird as a 1970 1/2 Firebird. The design change was dramatic and was so appealing that the body style continued all the way to 1981. This example is a base Firebird located in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Firebird is listed here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. The car has a rear facing scoop mounted to the hood and Trans Am front and rear spoilers added. The car is currently bid to $16,777 after 12 bids.

The sandalwood interior has the correct 1970 bucket seats with no console. The automatic transmission shifter is column mounted and the interior shows tears and wear along with a dirty carpet. The car does not appear to have many options. The seller states that they have the original air conditioning components that are no longer installed. The car is said to be driveable but it might be advisable to rebuild the brake and fuel system before driving it very much.

Under the hood is a 1990 Chevrolet high performance crate motor. The seller has only had the car for 2 years so I don’t know how long the engine has been in the car. The 454 cubic inch V8 engine is modified with aluminum heads and a mild cam. The car is missing the inner fender well and the fan shroud. It appears that an aftermarket radiator has also been installed. The automatic transmission is identified as a GM Turbo Hydramatic 400. The largest stock engine available in the 1970 Pontiac Firebird was a Ram Air III or Ram Air IV 400 cubic inch V8 engine available in the Formula or Trans Am models.

The seller states that they are not going to part out the car or sell the engine separately. The seller does indicate that he has the correct Trans Am front fenders that could be used to clone the car into a Trans Am. There is something funking going on with the hood scoop as it looks like it has been epoxied to the hood. The car is said to be solid and knowing that it is a running car helps support the bids that are coming in. The reserve has been met so the car should sell at the end of the auction.

    The non inner fenders on a rainy day will likely cause engine failure due water spraying on electrical and ignition

    Now this is what I consider a rare car. Rare in the fact that the lower quarter panels and/or rear window channel isn’t rusted out. The second generation F body is almost guaranteed to rust in those areas. I always liked the look of the front end on the 1970-1973 Firebird and Trans Am.

    Hood scoop is glued on since you need a factory air cleaner to attach it. Rear of the car looks a mess with the cracked rear panel and mis aligned rear spoiler. High bids are probably for the motor only.

    The hood scoop appears to be “bonded” with spray foam insulation, I’ve seen crazier things. The main draw is how solid this car appears to be. I really don’t have a huge issue with the rat under the hood, even though I am a Pontiac guy. There are a lot of possibilities with this one, I’ve had 4 71-73’s the 73 was a 4 speed TA with factory AC and honeycombs…one on many I wish I still had. Great project.

    $16k!!! Really?!! This thing is crap! Its a hodgepodge of crap!
    If he can get 16 k for that my 76 Formula survivor in MINT condition might be worth someting after all.
