If you have been around the car scene for any length of time, you either know someone or you’re the one whose project just stalled. A new job, kids, and, in this case, moving out of state can prompt you to sell the project you had great hopes for. This 1969 LeMans is someone’s dream drag-racing car, and it has been benched. It is now offered here on craigslist in Edmonds, Washington, for $12,500. Thank you, Curvette, for another great Pontiac tip!
The main crux of this sale is the 501-cubic-inch Pontiac, reportedly 700 horsepower on the Dyno. The seller notes that legendary Pontiac engine specialist Dave Bischopp, owner of SD Performance in British Columbia, built it. The engine has 13.5:1 compression and Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads ported for the Edelbrock Victor Intake. On top of that intake sits a Holley 1050 Dominator carb running on 110-octane race fuel. The engine is said to have only 500 non-drag-strip miles.
There is a complete Aeromotive fuel system, a solid roller cam, and 2-inch ceramic Hooker SuperComp headers. The transmission is a Turbo 350 with a Hughes 4,500 RPM stall converter. The Chevy 12-bolt differential has 4:10 Yukon gears and Yukon axles, plus an Eaton Posi unit. The rear Mickey Thompson ET Race tires are 28×10.5, and the car has drag shocks on all four corners, with drag springs in the rear. There is no need to discuss restoration here, as the base 1969 Lemans won’t command more than the mid-twenties, which is probably less than you would put into it.
The ad doesn’t mention the interior or include pictures of it, which is why it isn’t available here. The seller points out that the windshield needs to be replaced and that a roll bar is required to take it to the strip. They also state that, as you can see a little in the pictures, the car has the normal GM A-body rust on the rear quarters, trunk lid, trunk floor, etc. They also have documentation of the dyno results, head flow numbers, and all the original invoices for any serious buyer. Looking up SD Performance engine pricing showed me that the starting point for a 501 cubic inch motor is around $15,000, and with options it can go to around $20k. Can this car become an NHRA Super Stock or IHRA Top Stock contender with the right budget? Or is the drivetrain worth the price of the whole car and more? Full race car project or the sum of its parts?
