Drop-Top Pony: 1972 Ford Mustang

It’s hard to believe that the 1971- 73 Ford Mustangs were based on the original 1965 versions. They had grown in size and weight (some 800 lbs.) in just a few years. A diet was on its way in 1974 with the downsized Mustang II. In 1972, Ford produced just over 6,000 convertibles like the one you see here. This example seems to be in great condition, which adds up to the asking price of $24,000 here on craigslist. You can find the Ford in Kuna, Idaho (another signature tip from “Cuvette”).

Even with a fresh new body, sales of the Ford Mustang declined in 1971 for the fifth year in a row (to about 150,000 units). The little-changed ’72 models saw another drop of 25,000 units, but demand rebounded slightly by 10,000 copies in ’73. Ford’s timing of the release of the subcompact Mustang II was perfect as the OPEC oil embargo arrived at about the same time. Sales blossomed to almost the kinds of numbers the mid-1960s Mustangs saw.

We’re not treated to the history of this sharp-looking drop-top. It’s powered by a 351 cubic inch “Cleveland” V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. Detuning had just begun, so the performance of the bloated ‘72s was still decent. The transmission is an automatic, so driving this ragtop should require minimal effort. The seller excludes listing the mileage besides a placeholder of “1111”.

It’s possible this Mustang has been restored, at least partially. The body, paint, stripes, top, and interior all look good in the few photos provided, with a minimum of different angles. We’re told it’s a good runner with good tires, and no reference is made to any outstanding work the buyer will need to deal with. So, this could be one of the nicest ’72 Mustang convertibles left since the original population was less than 5% of overall production.

Maybe there are only 1111 miles in that condition
