The Lamborghini Diablo was my childhood dream car. I had the poster and it was my favorite to find while thumbing through duPont Registry at the newsstand. And I hate to admit it, I’ve even considered building a kit car version. We all know it’s cheaper to buy one already built though, so this replica listed here on eBay is mighty tempting.

Most Lambo kit cars are built on Fiero chassis, but this one has a custom tubular frame underneath that fiberglass skin. That could be good or bad depending on the welding job. The seller claims that this one was built by D&R Replicars but they are no longer in business. Total Performance has taken over so it might be a good idea to call them to confirm and find out if there are any parts still available.

Luckily the engine was sourced from a Pontiac so mechanical bits should be easy to find. A V6 out of an American sedan may not be as powerful or exotic as a big V12, but it will be a lot cheaper to run. Parts should be cheap and easy to get. Wait a sec, I thought this was a childhood dream we were talking about here. Obviously some of us are getting too sensible in our old age.

If you have ever looked inside a real Diablo, you probably weren’t real impressed. It’s pretty plain in there. Well, you won’t be let down here either. The parts store sports seats and big subwoofer in the center console finish off any respectability this car had. It’s too bad because you probably could have convinced yourself it was like the real thing right until you slid into the seat and reached for that shift knob.

Then again, it does have scissor doors and the iconic wedge shape is there. The seller is asking $47,500… That seems steep for a kit car but it does seem fairly well-built and the real thing would set back about another $300k! What do you think? Would this scratch your Lamborghini Diablo itch or would it be better to buy something a little more sensible?

I enlarged the first photo, but I still couldn’t make out the “Christmas Tree” between the two vehicles. Perhaps it is just out of the frame to the right…
I’ll stick with my white 1986 Ford Escort hatchback, 4 speed, manual window cranks and radio delete.
Should have taken it outside for better photos, maybe there is a reason why.
That’s a hell of a nice man cave!
Even the bricks are replicas.
I agree with Howie I also wonder why the seller didn’t take the car out side to get some better pictures. Pictures are worth a 1000 words and his pictures don’t say a whole lot.
