Factory Big Block X-Code: 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7

This is a cool, unrestored 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 sent to us by Matt H. We appreciate the tip and like to see complete running cars like this that might need just a little work to bring them back to life. The Cougar XR-7 is a factory big block car that the seller is asking $12,500. This special Cougar is listed for sale here on Craigslist and is located in Seattle, Washington.

The interior probably needs the most work. As shown, the leather seats are worn and faded and have some duct tape holding the driver seat upholstery in place. This car was optioned with the XR-7 deluxe interior. There is no carpet in the car but it does have floor mats covering floorboards. The seller states that both front pans need a patch panel to fix the rot caused by rust. The car has both a lower and upper console. The odometer shows 96,000 miles.

The special thing about this Cougar XR-7 is that it is equipped with an X Code 390 cubic inch V8 (6.4 liter) engine that was rated at 320 horsepower from the factory in 1968. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission and is said to run and drive great. The car is equipped with dual exhausts, power steering and power brakes. This car would be easy to restore to factory original or it could be just spruced up and enjoyed in its original condition.

The seller states that the car has not been painted and most of the original paint is still in place. It is hard to tell too much about the condition of the paint because the pictures are taken at night but it looks faded. The Cougar XR-7 still has it original hub caps and the wheels are wrapped in white wall tires. The XR-7 package cost $185 and included a simulated wood dash, full instrumentation and an overhead console. This car looks legit and read for a new home.

I worked for Boeing in 68 and a coworker had a b new XR7 with 390 and 4 speed. It was triple black. We worked the swing shift and got off work at 11:30 pm. He always spun donuts in the parking lot before leaving.

Always liked the toggle switches on the dash. Touch of European style.

Don’t forget to add lead to the fuel tank,or you will be buying some new heads.,.

Actually Ford was ahead of GM and Chrysler and had their valves hardened so low lead or unleaded fuel wouldn’t destroy them.

I sold one exactly like this in 1999 in Fort Collins, CO. It had 85-90K miles on it and everything was original…except for the 4 bbl manifold and edelbrok performer carb I installed. Only thing wrong was A/C didn’t work and minor tear in driver’s seat. $5200, haha

    X-Code is not 320hp, it’s 280hp. S-Code is 320hp

Did any X codes feature dual quads?

No, not on 390s. ‘67 was the last year for multiple carbs on Fords, and only on 427s or the 428 Police Interceptor, as far as my research finds.

X code was the factory 2 barrel 390 engine. Looked at a ’68 Mustang GT/CS X code a while back.

My right car was a 67 390 car it had 6.5 litre emblems on the side of the car. I always figured it had been made for the Canadian market and made its way back.
That car would burn the tires off the rims if you didn’t let up. It started smoking so bad I sold it for $50 . I’ve looked for it since but couldn’t find it in the field where the guy bought it and put it.

My brother had this exact same car, it just didn’t have the XR-7 option. When he decided to sell it, I asked him if I could use around town so people would see the 4 sale signs.
I am not the luckiest person around, and one night when I took my niece and nephew home, I left the car running while I took them into the house. 10 seconds later I came out and the car was gone.
It was found 3 days later wrapped around a tree. Brother was not too happy

Coolest option (and rarest) on the 67-68 Cougars was the TV option. I’ve only seen one Cougar with this option, it added an additional antenna and the small TV would plug into the antenna via a port on the driver’s side door jamb.

    there was a 390 with 375 horses in the early 60’s.. and a tri-power T-Bird with a 390 once (FYI all you 390 buffs) ! and a 360 HP 429 ! Later in the 60’s..
