Field Find Wagon: 1972 Plymouth Fury Suburban

Most folks relate the Suburban nameplate to a big Chevrolet SUV. But 50 or more years ago, it applied to a full-size station wagon sold by Plymouth. The seller has an example from 1972 (the seller is unsure of the model year) that’s been sitting in a field for five years. It doesn’t run, and the interior is rough, but the body seems to have held up, despite an attack by mildew. Located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, this project or parts car is available here on craigslist for $4,500. Thumbs up to Tony Primo on the tip.

The 1972 Fury Suburban came in three trim levels: Suburban, Custom Suburban, and Sport Suburban. We assume it’s the entry-level version, but there were at least 48,000 of them were produced in total that year. A V8 engine was standard, and the one in the seller’s wagon is said to displace 400 cubic inches, new that year (replacing the 383?).

This wagon saw a lot of action before its “retirement” around 2021. The odometer reads 50,000 mile,s but it rolled over, so 150k or more seems likely. An automatic transmission supports the V8 (727 TorqueFlite?). We gather the wagon was parked because something mechanical failed, so who knows what it will take to revive this big-as-life Mopar.

We don’t know the paint color as it appears a coat of grey primer covers the body from head to toe. Yet, the seller says the thing hasn’t “rotted out at all,” given its exposure. But mildew and/or algae haven’t been in short supply and can be found on the sides of the wagon. It’s unlikely this machine once had any faux woodgrain paneling. BTW, the title is missing, so a bill of sale will have to suffice. Ready to take the plunge?

That old boy is a marketing genius. For about a grand, this wagon would make a good parts runner for a shop.

One too many zeros in that price. Not priced to sell.

I bet those field mice would be upset if they got evicted. The grass grown on fender well adds character too.

I guess every field car has a price for the owner dreaming of a nice payday.

I am sure the owner would be glad to entertain offers.

    GLWS!

Must’ve been really nice when it was new, a 400 with A/C and cruise control for long family trips.

I agree with a 400 and A/C here but why was it parked back then. This would make a nice cruiser here. Don’t see these to often. Body seems pretty straight. Cleaning it up on a weekend would show it better and more pictures mostly of undercarriage after sitting there for 5 years. get it for 1500-2000 dollars and you have something to work with.

I always enjoy looking at the background and wondering what the rest of the story is. This wagon has obviously been sitting under a bunch of pine trees before being dragged to its latest resting place, the others drug in from elsewhere as well, looks like they’re lined up for auction. Looks like the sheep are keeping the grass down, if they had cattle, the door handles and mirrors would have hair stuck in them.

The hidden headlights and the bright tailgate trim mark this as a Fury Custom Suburban. The base Suburban had exposed headlights, and Sport Suburban had woodgrain trim on the sides and tailgate.

Back when I wasn’t much more than a tadpole, one of my neighbor buds’ mom had the Chrysler version of this. I loved riding in that rear-facing third seat! So long ago, but I remember it like yesterday…or maybe last week. 😂

ive been looking for one of these, i was young when my Dad had one, blue. If this had power windows i wouldnt hesitate. Its in solid and straight condition, nose and tail are clean and complete. Engine bay is intact. $4500 is a perfectly appropriate price and the asking price, so..

I borrowed a 71 model back in the mid 70’s from a used car lot and drove it about 300 miles. It had a 318 with one bbl carburetor and automatic. It really surprised me when it got about 28 miles to the gallon on that I-5 ride down western Washington state and back to Everett, Washington. Comfortable beach seat too.

Georgia does not require a title for registration of vehicles manufactured before 1985. Bill of sale will suffice.

Would be interesting to see this all cleaned up. My guess is that it wasn’t parked where the pictures were taken, but was probably under a pine tree as you can see a pile of Pine needles on the windshield, that’s probably Pine needles under the hood as well. That might explain the moss and such growing on the side of the wagon. If you zoom in close to behind the rear tires, it does not appear that there is any rust there which is a good sign.
