No Reserve Droptop: 1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

A fun option Ford eliminated on post-1988 Mustang Fox body offerings was the availability of T-Tops, but the convertible continued to thrive, and it’s especially stylish when combined with the GT trim such as this one here on eBay.  The seller doesn’t provide an excessive amount of specific details about his GT but does tell us it’s an all-stock and unmolested example, so let’s take a look and see what else the photos can tell us.  The car is located in Dunnellon, Florida, with the no-reserve auction price currently sitting at $4,550.

Fortunately, a Carfax is provided which reports that the Mustang spent at least from 1996-2012 in Dewitt, Michigan, then in 2019 it shows a different owner who also resided in MI, so when exactly it traveled south to Florida is unknown.  Perhaps it was recently, as the seller tells us he just drove the car 1,100 miles without any problems from the 5.0, and the 2 photos we get to view from the engine compartment seem to show things appearing to be in good order under the hood, with one hopefully minor snafu pointed out being a leaky O ring in the A/C.

This one’s also stated as very clean and unrestored, so I’m guessing that’s still the original black paint outside, which still seems to be in fairly decent shape overall with at least one area showing some chips, as can be seen on the front end, and also a scrape or two such as on the top of the driver’s fender and around the trunk opening on the same side.   A bicycle being transported inside the trunk might explain what happened in the rear, but the front area is a mystery.  In spite of the flaws, the exterior appearance isn’t that bad at all for the most part, and the body panels still seem like they are in good condition.

Although they were of the cloth variety,  I had seats like this in my ’93 Mustang and they were some of the most comfortable lumbar adjustable buckets I can ever remember owning.  The leather is starting to show its age here as is the top canvas, but the dash looks nicely preserved and mostly stock except for the Alpine stereo.  Demand for Fox bodies seems strong and steady, and for a driver, this one seems OK without putting too much effort into it immediately, but I’m sure some would make plans for a fresh paint job sooner rather than later.  What would you do here?

The turbine wheels from 87-90 looked much better on the GT’s than the 91-93 five-star pony rims.

I loved my 89 lx. Someone ordered it with a complete Cobra drivetrain and suspension. 5 speed trans which ended up being my problem because when it “disintegrated” I couldn’t find one that fit and when I finally went to the Ford dealership, that’s when I found out everything was Cobra except the LX parts. FAST AND FUN!!! 😁 Also drove amazing with that suspension. Cornered like it was on rails. Then a friends shop it was at burned down and my 2nd favorite car I ever owned was no more. This is nice but personally in the fox body platform I like the hatchback better. Unfortunately I can’t afford a good one now. GLWTS.

Nice car, too bad it is saddled with an AOD. OTOH, love the old school Alpine ‘pull-out’ cassette head unit. Had the exact same unit in my ’87 XR4Ti

I love these fox body Mustangs. Had a 90 LX convertible with a 5 speed that I loved. Wouldn’t mind owning this one, I’ve been looking for one like this that’s AOD to use as a daily. Manual doesn’t work well in LA traffic. This one sold for $6100 so I’ll keep looking. Thanks for sharing it.
