The Malaise Era nearly killed the American muscle car because of emissions regulations and insurance concerns. The genre made a comeback in the 1980s, but most enthusiasts consider the brutal 1960s vehicles the best of the breed. This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 exemplifies this, with a potent big-block V8 under the hood. It presents superbly after a meticulous restoration and needs nothing but a new home. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Zappenduster for spotting the SS listed here on Craigslist near Farmington, New Mexico, for $50,000.

Released in 1968, Chevrolet performed only minor styling updates to the Second Generation Chevelle for the 1969 model year. It featured a revised grille and taillights, but the company saw no reason to make major changes to a car selling in impressive numbers. This ’69 Chevelle’s first owner ordered the SS 396 variant, becoming the proud custodian of one of the automotive world’s great muscle cars. The seller performed a frame-off restoration about six years ago, and the listing suggests it was a DIY effort. If so, they appear pretty skilled, because the finished product shows an eye for detail. The panels are laser-straight, and the gaps are tight and consistent. The Fathom Green paint has a depth of color and shine you could almost walk into, and the Black vinyl top looks perfect. I see no evidence of rust, and I wouldn’t expect any, given the car’s recent history. The trim and tinted glass are spotless, and the wheels are like new.

You could never call this Chevelle an automotive wimp. It features a 396ci V8, a four-speed manual transmission, a 12-bolt 3.73 Posi rear end, power steering, and power front disc brakes. The big-block is the L34 version, delivering 350hp and 415 ft/lbs of torque, as stated in that year’s Dealer Information Handbook. These cars were genuinely fast, capable of delivering sub-15-second ¼-mile ETs off the showroom floor. This SS should come close to matching those figures, as it has covered only about 2,000 miles since the seller rebuilt the V8. It features new tires and a larger aluminum radiator to keep the big-block’s temperature under control. It is unclear whether the Chevelle is numbers-matching, but the buyer could fly in and drive this baby home.

It appears the interior didn’t escape the seller’s attention during the build, because it looks stunning. Trimmed in Green vinyl, it features bucket seats, a console, and a sports gauge cluster with a factory tachometer. The photos aren’t detailed enough to confirm, but I think the factory radio may have made way for a retro-style stereo. The upholstery shows no wear, and the carpet appears to have only dust that would disappear with a quick vacuum. The dash is spotless, and the pad is crack-free. It isn’t lavishly equipped, but life inside this SS should be extremely comfortable, no matter the distance.

Opinions vary, but most enthusiasts agree the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is among the most desirable American muscle cars. They reflect an era when horsepower reigned supreme, and owners expected stunning performance. This 1969 example is a beauty, with no apparent needs. Although the seller’s price isn’t pocket change, it looks realistic compared to recent successful sales. It’s been on the market for about four days, but are you tempted to approach the seller before day five? I wish you luck if you do, and I’m sure that our Barn Finds readers would like an update if you become its new owner.
