Free Pine Cones! 1971 AMC Javelin

Barn Finds reader Jack In NW referred this Javelin to us, and I for one would like to thank him. When I look at cars to write about sometimes I’m attracted by rarity, sometimes by the potential. This one grabbed me because of both the potential and the advertiser’s sense of humor. Located in Crestline, California, this AMC can be found here on eBay with no reserve!

In its current state, this car is no oil painting, but there’s definitely potential there. The seller says that there is no additional charge for the pine cones. They also say that the majority of the sheet metal appears to be solid. He wants someone to take this sweet green machine home (his words). He then says that sweet may be a stretch and there’s work to be done, but “this is ‘Murica and we make rad things happen”.

From what we can see the interior appears to be mostly intact, and the front seats don’t look too bad at all. There are no shots of the rear seat upholstery and it’s hard to tell about the state of the driver’s door card, but the passenger one looks quite good. The dash and instrument panel are currently dismantled. This may be something to do with the fact that the seller advises that the car will require a wiring loom.

There are no photos of the engine. It is not in the car but is stored away on a stand, clean and covered. The engine is a 304ci, but the seller is unsure whether this is the original engine or not. Regardless, there has been a fair amount of work done on it and this alone may be worth the price of admission. It has been bored and honed with new pistons and rings, and has also been balanced. The short motor has been assembled, but there is no word on the state of the top end. Due to the lack of shots of the engine or engine bay, I’ve included this shot of the rear passenger compartment. This shows that the rear seat is present, and also that the roof lining may be in good condition as well.

As the seller so delicately puts it, “no amount of Instagram filter would make this 20-year yard ornament look like a supermodel” but there is potential there for sure. Depending on where the bidding goes, this might be a good project for someone. I’ll leave the last word on this to the seller: “Somebody restore this thunderous green ride and properly terrorizes pavement and Toyota Prius drivers.”

at 510 now..possibly someone could afford this beauty, wonder what the underbelly looks like?

Good luck to the new owner, hope someone gets it that can bring it back and do it justice!

If I had the money to buy this or the Boss 302 Mustang I would take this Javelin any day,at least it looks salvageable and it even has an engine and tranny a 304 is no Boss 302 but can be built up to have decent power. Even if only the short-block comes with it, throw on a set of edelbrock heads and intake Holley, or edelbrock carb. replace wiring harness etc (just hope dash is included) repair any rust and you would still be money ahead comparatively.

Yep I really like it, it is so much like the junk yard Javelin that I returned to the road. I love mine and some one will love this one too! Thanks for reposting. To clarify that is NW PA I need to change that.

      Love it Jack

Has some character between the side pipes and that crinkly fender. I roll up by it and think “that dude’s crazy, I’ll leave this one alone ! Mean that in a good way, nice car man…

At least he’s not trying to retire on the sale of this like so many others want to do

Pretty rough Javelin but if it’s not rusted that’s a huge part of the battle. I see a hillbilly horn button on the side of the steering column. (Something I’ve used myself quite a few times over the years.) No underhood shots – might well have vacuum windshield wipers!

“Intact” isn’t the adjective I’d use to describe that interior, especially the dashboard.

“Disassembled” might be a better choice of word.

It is a shame all Javelins in Mexico came with the 6 cylinder engine.

AMCs are only worth the trouble and effort if they aren’t riddled with rust to start with.

Wish I still had my 73. This one looks like a good starting point to go in any direction. That is, as long as the underside is still mostly there.

I would say the interior is mostly NOT intact! Where do you get the idea that it is “mostly intact”? Plus, that front seat upholstery is not anything close to original.

The car is completely original and hasn’t been on the highway since 1992. It was a great buy due to it not having any rust on it because it has been sitting on top of a mountain above Crestline, CA. It was a gigantic pain to get it loaded and down the mountain but well worth the price I paid for the car. It came with a original rebuilt short block 304 with rebuilt heads.

I plan to have the car completely restored by the end of next summer!

maddvector, is that the same car as the featured car_ If it is can you tell us if the interior is original as it looks from the pictures that the front seats were redone with a cheap material.

Yes this is the featured car. The interior is original as is most of the car.

Engine, transmission and drive train are all redone and back together.

I just starting on the body and I should have it painted in the next month.. It has taken me longer that I originally anticipated but that is life.
