Going After The Youth Market: 1969 AMC Javelin

American Motors jumped into the “pony car” game in 1968 with the Javelin, which had underpinnings shared with the American. It was in the line-up for seven years and across two generations before AMC exited the field in 1974. The ’69 Javelins were little changed from the initial ‘68s and found 40,675 buyers, perhaps a good showing by Kenosha standards. This one looks to be nice, maybe a survivor with a small-block V8 and 68,000 miles. Offered by a dealer or consignment house in Delta, Colorado, this Mustang fighter is available here on eBay for $26,900. Thanks for the tip, Curvette!

A full range of AMC powerplants was available to 1969 Javelin buyers, from an inline-6 to a 390 V8. The seller’s car has a smaller 290 V8, which may be original but could have been modified as the stock units came with a 2-barrel carburetor, and this one has a 4-barrel. Just over half of the Javelins built in 1969 had the 290, so at least that many of AMC’s customers weren’t buying the car for muscle. 56% of the automobiles came with SST trim, while the rest were “basic” Javelins.

The body and red paint on this AMC look good (no vinyl top). What we can see of the interior may be good, too, but the bucket seats are wearing aftermarket fuzzy cover,s so we don’t know if they’re there for comfort or to hide anything. The options list for this car was active and includes an automatic transmission, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, and power steering and brakes. The car has dual exhaust, but that may have been added later.

We’re told this “Rambler” lived in a garage when it wasn’t out piling on miles. The bling in the engine compartment could be for show or an indicator of some upgrades besides the manifold and carburetor. The tires are newer, and the spare hasn’t been on the ground. If you’re in the market for a pony car from the 1960s, you’d have a vehicle less seen compared to a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro.
